Editorial Review:

Amazon.com essential video:
This is the movie that made John Waters famous, and quite possibly the film that made bad taste cool. Yes, Virginia, a large transvestite actually eats dog feces as a kind of dizzying denouement to this frequently illogical and intentionally disgusting movie, but by the time that happens, you're already numb ... and you've possibly laughed to the point of losing bladder control.

The plot revolves around two vile families laying claim to the title "The Filthiest People Alive." You've got pregnant women in pits, you've got grown men getting sexual satisfaction from chickens, you've got people licking furniture to perform trailer-park voodoo, and you've got classic lines like: "Oh my God! The couch ... it ... it rejected you!"

Waters, who went on to direct genuine pop-culture classics such as Hairspray and Serial Mom, made this celluloid sideshow with one aim--to make a name for himself. It worked. He does have a genuine eye for filmmaking (when the trailer burns down, you feel the white heat of Divine's pain and anger). On the other hand, you won't notice any disclaimers about stunt doubles and animals not being mistreated. There weren't, and they were. Welcome to the filthiest film in the world. --Grant Balfour

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Greatest Soundtrack Ever!
The songs on this album never cease to make me smile and shake it for all its worth. The mental pictures from the film that each track conjures up is a bonus. Like Mr. Waters points out, these tunes are truly filthy!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - still shocking
Divine and company at their vile best. VERY worth watching if you are a big fan of John Waters and his friends. Eggs Eggs. Chicken sex. Great hair. Turkey baster. I feel better knowing that even my most jaded friends are still disturbed by at least 2 scenes in this film. I like Multiple Maniacs better, in fact I like every John Waters movie better except Cecil B Demented (what a stinker).

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Babs Johnson: "... Filth is my politics! Filth is my life!"
It took me a week after I received "Pink Flamingos" from Netflix to watch it. I was very well aware of its reputation and especially of the last scene and I was literally afraid to see it. At last, I made up my mind, took all my courage and watched the impossibly obscene, terribly disgusting, outrageous to a limit, shocking to a nausea, but at the same time extremely funny criminal cult comedy. The film that was made on the shoe-string budget by the self-proclaimed king of bad and nasty taste, native Baltimorian, Mr. John Waters, in 1972, still has not become outdated and would shock you like no other. If you only imagine something disgusting, mean and dirty, rest assured - Waters uses it in the film, his debut feature, and has a lot of fun with it. He does not care a bit how shocking the characters ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Sorry, not funny
I love Divine and John Waters, but this film went too far. I can't deal with rape, animal abuse, or coprophagous acts on the screen.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Poor Chicken
I love John Waters, but I REALLY didn't appreciate the chicken scene. Animal cruelty isn't art in my opinion.
