VHS : The Karate Kid Part III
Karate Kid III has gotten a lot of play time on cable TV, which is where I first saw it. Not nearly as beloved as the previous two installments for a variety of reasons it's generally panned as being cartoonishly acted and using the same basic formula as it's predecessors. Ralph Macchio returns as the getting older but seldom wiser Daniel while Pat Morita resumes the role of the sagely guiding force of Mr. Miyagi.

First off, despite my 3 star rating, I actually *did* enjoy this movie. There are parts in the movie that really shine and then others that are slogged down by what can only be described as the result of over the top acting and in may ways a really weak script. It's a pretty simple plot that can be described in a single paragraph.

Daniel and Mr. Miyagi return ... Read More

VHS : Battle Creek Brawl (aka ""The Big Brawl"")
I saw this w/"enter the dragon" in the theater yrs ago and "Brawl" was just as good, today I'd say it is better because of its originality. There are no other big budget movies featuring wrestlers, roller skating, gangsters, comedy and kung fu all in one movie especially taking place in the 1940's. No speeding up the film for the fights here(unlike jackie's hong kong films), still Chan is very fast and outmaneuvering everyone including some monster sized wrestlers. Mako and Chan keep the laughs coming during their training scenes but it's not all comedy when gangsters betting against him in the brawl kidnap his uncle and want him to take a "dive", but when the tables turn, Lalo schifrin's music kicks in and the suspense takes your breath away while chan goes for some payback. Disc picture, audio is ... Read More

VHS : The Karate Kid Part II
Following Daniel-San's (Macchio) triumphant, albeit incredibly improbable, victory at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament, there is little time to celebrate. Mr. Miyagi (Morita) gets a letter from Okinawa informing him that his father is dying. He knows this is a potentially deadly situation because of an old grudge with his former best friend Sato. Nonetheless, Miyagi let's the recently dumped Daniel-San (it was only a matter of time before Elisabeth Shue realized she was dating a sissy) come along for the trip.

Upon arriving in Okinawa, Miyagi soon realizes that he has very little time. Not only will his father die very soon, but his former best friend Sato - who incidentally has a watermelon for a head - wants to fight him to the death. It turns out that Miyagi left his homeland eons ago ... Read More

VHS : Right to Remain Silent
In THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT, a rookie cop (Lea Thompson) who graduated the academy with highest grades experiences her first night shift at the precinct house. Eight people are booked for far-ranging reasons (a drunk driver, a crossdresser, a KKKer, a mugger, a man who helped his terminally ill wife commit suicide, etc.). Good cast is featured in TV movie based on a play that is by turns humorous, melancholy, thought-provoking and preachy.

(Not available on DVD.)

In the biggest hit movie of 1985, BACK TO THE FUTURE (and its two sequels), Lea Thompson played Michael J. Fox's girlfriend.

VHS : Enter the Dragon
I really enjoyed this film because it was a lot more than just a martial arts flick in which the plot was just an afterthought to surround the fighting scenes like most martial arts films then and even now. In fact, as has been pointed out by many reviewers here the action scenes are certainly not the best fight scenes ever but that's okay as it's clear that that was never Bruce Lee's intention in the first place. This film was more of a vehicle for Bruce to try and pass along his philosophy which is why the previously deleted scenes from the original screening which has been added here are so important.

That's not to say that all the fight scenes were poor because that's just not true. The scenes were pretty brief because as Bruce himself has mentioned, the real-life fights are never drawn out and lengthy as the fastest one who ... Read More
