VHS : Allnighter
This movie does not deserve too many words -- it's largely a forgetable, vanity project made by Susanna Hoff's mother, Tamar Hoffs, for her pop singer daughter. It's vacuous and difficult to sit throgh -- at least Beack Blanket Bingo had those Annette and Frankie duets interspersed between the weak plots. And that extended scene with a half-naked Susanna looking in the mirror while Aretha Franklin's Respect plays in the bckground. Respect? No wonder she never got any again after making this atrocious waste of celluloid.

VHS : Big Doll House
At times, you don't know exactly how silly this is supposed to be, and the whole film has a tone of naivety in spite of its run of sex and violence (with drug addiction thrown in for good measure). The plot couldn't be more simple: a group of women in prison, led by the resourceful Collier (top-billed Judy Brown), plan an escape. Inside snitch Grear (Pam Grier in her first speaking film role) slips information back and forth to the guards and the evil warden, Ms. Dietrich (a hilarious Christiane Schmidtmer, best remembered for The Giant Spider Invasion), in order to get smack for her lesbian lover cellmate. Guards torment and molest prisoners. Prisoners get naked (though not as much as you'd expect for this genre). One evil head guard, Lucian (Kathryn Lodern, the quasi-Bette Davis villainess from ... No need to be put off by this rating I personally love this movie. I am exploitation -enthusiasts and would have rated it much higher but instead I save myself for being a bias. Fashionable feminism, utterly unwarranted nudity, catfights, overdramatic dialogue are all right here in "The Arena," a lavish spectacle (by New World standards) in which the audience is treated to Caged Heat in gladiator drag. Of course, most DVD buyers will probably want to snag this one up for Pam Grier, doing by far the most explicit and unabashed nudity of her career. Luckily, it also happens to be quite a fun film.

The Roman Empire was at its height (and right after the Spartacus revolt, as one minor character is quick to point out), the Romans took delight in pillaging other cultures, slaughtering innocents, ... Read More

Toning things down a bit from Big Doll House, Hill returned to his old stomping grounds the following year to make The Big Bird Cage, essentially a spoof of the WIP genre. If you don't take it too seriously and can handle a few sudden 180-degree mood swings, it's one of the most entertaining and certainly best-made women's prison movies of the 1970's. Somewhere on a dictatorially reigned tropical island, American actress Terry (Anita Ford) is taken hostage by revolutionary Django (Sid Haig), when he pulls of a heist on a bar with his girlfriend Blossom (Pam Grier) and other fellow revolutionaries. While on the run from the police, Django leaves Terry back, who is mistaken for his female accomplice and brought to a jungle prison camp for women...

Anitra Ford is the token heroine, but Pam Grier makes ... Read More

VHS : Fort Apache the Bronx
In the war zone of the South Bronx, the police of the 41st Precinct have the worst absentee record in the city, the most disability record claims, the least conviction per arrests, and there's nobody doing anything and the men aren't motivated...

The first petition of the new captain Dennis Connolly (Ed Asner) was to make it clear that there is zero progress on the investigation on the murders of two policemen (killed on the opening of the film by an addicted hooker played nicely by Pam Grier). For the good officer the case must be cleared even if his men have to take extraordinary measures to clear it...

Murphy (Newman) comes from three generations of cops... All his friends are cops... He gets drunk every night... He is essentially honest and he doesn't trust anyone but his partner, Corelli (Ken Wahl). ... Read More

It's not often I get to see a movie that isn't
1) unbelievably complicated in psychological meaning OR
2) unbelievably complicated in futuristic technology SO

I found it GREAT ENTERTAINMENT, REFRESHING, POSITIVE, AND
most of all CLEAN, HEALTHY FUN!

This is the best I've seen Richard Pryor star in, and
the real life Horatio Alger story is a real force for
success motivation, even though I am a WASP.

Only the jaded and/or mean spirited would turn this one down.

Why did it seem like Tommy Lee Jones was doing his 'Strannix thing" from "Under Siege" in this movie? The plot winds into predictable end that makes you say "Where have I seen this before?" The movie seemed like a ripoff of so many other political/assassination-type flicks I've seen before. Not many surprises (if any) in this movie.

VHS : Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
Time travel's most unlikely heroes are at it again. This time the romp isn't as fun as their first movie. You would think with the same writing team from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure some of the old magic would still be there. Alas it wasn't. It's not that Bogus Journey wasn't funny or enjoyable enough to watch, but at the same time it's not in the same league as its predecessor on many levels.

First off the future setting was off from before. The futuristic costumes in this movie took a massive turn for the worse compared to the last one (can you say day-glow foam suits?). Sets weren't as bad, but you can notice a change. The villain also seemed out of place in this film, but I guess he keeps the plot moving. Granted the evil Bill and Ted robots and their blatant badness were amusing... to a point. Then it gets tired and ... Read More
