VHS : Carlos Saura Dance Trilogy Part 1 - Carmen
This is one of my all-time favorite films. The color and dancing are spectacular but I think he most interesting and intelligent aspect of he film is the confusion of reality with unreality; life with an opera. The film, which starts on a concrete level becomes more and more surreal as Gades slips into a form of madness--a madness, perhaps, fated by the Gods.

He is obsessed with finding the perfect Carmen and...to their mutual destruction...he finds her. Reality and the opera become increasingly intertwined until Gades distorted reality becomes more powerful than life itself. In parallel with Bizet's Carmen, Gades falls inexplicably and helplessly in love with he faithless Carmen. I won't write more. You really need to see it yourself.

VHS : Pavarotti & Friends for War Child
This Concert is Outstanding. The Show begins with a captivating and alluring overhead of Modena, the beloved hometown of the Great Tenor of all time. The very heartwrenching duet with Eric Clapton and Luciano Pavarotti singing "Holy Mother" is a True treasure. Look closely at Pavarotti as he is really enjoying the Guitar strains of Eric Clapton. I also love the way Pavarotti sings this song. He really places a lot of feeling . The Choir behind Eric Clapton also notices that they are witnesses to Greatness as the Powerful Luciano belts out His High C,
Liza and Pavarotti are both in High Gear as they sing "New York, New York! Pavarotti is very playful and amused by Liza. He kisses her three times. Secada really supports Luciano in the Granada. This song is very amusing because of Secada's ... Read More

VHS : Sevillanas
I have been a professional flamenco dancer throughout the US and in Spain, where I have studied extensively, for 15 years. I have also been a professional flamenco singer for the last 5 of those years. I loved this movie for the beautiful representation of the diversity of styles (both of the Sevillanas themselves and of the performers) that Saura has brought to the screen with obvious love and respect for flamenco and Spanish culture.

The artists in the film range from legendary professionals (Camaron, Manuela Carrasco, Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar, Merche Esmeralda, and SO many others) to unknown but passionate Spaniards. This is a valuable depiction of the variety of Sevillanas in Spain, that you can see in theaters, classrooms, nightclubs, and fiestas. I also appreciate that Saura showed ... Read More
