This month on TCM the star of the month has been Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald, and good old Robert Osborne has been playing films by this duo every Monday night. And not just the old chestnuts either but the unusual ones that the two stars made when they were apart from each other. I suppose Mayer figured, why put two of them in the same movie, it would be more cost efficient to spread out the love. Thus last night we saw, first, the bizarre, ethereal BALALAIKA which teams Nelson Eddy with the Czech sensation Ilona Massey; and then the action switched to CAIRO, rather a different cut of cloth.

The credits tell the story better than I can. The credits play across a backdrop of Egyptian postcard pictures, the desert sands, filmy desert tents pitched at oases, the Sphinx ... Read More

For some reason, I had an image of a really cheesy, cornball movie that was so-so. But I may have been thinking of Wild Wild West and/or Blazing Saddles.

I love Jackie Chan movies. This one doesn't disappoint! It's full of great action scenes, several doses of humor, and lots of Jackie goodness!

I liked it considerably more than The Medallion, which I watched a couple nights ago (at least decent fare in its own right). Now I really want to see Shanghai Knights and see if it's as good as the original.

I'd certainly rate this a "buy" if you're into Jackie, and maybe even if you're not. Good art direction, costuming, etc. Well choreographed fights. Etc. Good stuff!

VHS : Armageddon (1998)
This movie is one of the silliest, dumbest movies I have ever seen. When I saw this film, it was apparent that no thought, no research, no intelligence went into the writing at all. Let's start with the basic premise of the film. An asteroid is discovered and we have 17 days until it hits. What do we do? In the real world, we bend over and kiss our butt goodbye. There is absolutely *no* way a mission such as this could be planned, trained-for and executed in this time. 17 days wouldn't be enough time to prepare a standard shuttle launch, much less one with this type of mission. This movie blindly ignores this fact. I am always distressed when films treat people as mere cattle, props to use while pounding a point home and then forget. In the open of the movie, New York is hit with a barrage of ... Read More

The moment Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) arrives at the airport everything goes wrong...he is forced to check his luggage, he bought a rare flower to give to her parents, and he's a smoker. All minor issues until we meet Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) ... Read More

What wonderful acting! It must be very difficult to act that aloof and keep a straight face. The Ben and Owen make a great team and Will is the ultimate supporting actor!

True...it is a well known fact that, those who know of Wes Anderson, know that he is an "either-or" film maker. Plainly stated, you either love his work, or hate it. It is also known that Mr. Anderson's view of comedy is VERY dry...almost sarcastic and very realistic. (I mean, lets face it, there aren't that many Will Ferrels in everyday life) AND his use of this "stellar cast" in the film is almost a satire. He has the chance to use each talented member of the cast to the fullest, but chooses not to...almost to see how "realistic" each person can be...and how convincing each is to there own characters role...

So, all of the above in consideration...(and strictly in my opinion) I believe this is one of the single most entertaining films I have ever seen. Further more...I will even go as far as to say it is ... Read More
