VHS : A Midsummer Night's Dream
Now I know why this movie failed in the theaters. First of all - Shakespeare's plays with their Elizabethan English are too hard to understand by semi literate American audiences, especially of the 1930's. Second of all, there were way too many special effects, music, and dance numbers right out of Vaudeville. Thirdly, some of the fairies looked like something out of a nightmare of Dante's Inferno, appearing quite grotesque. Fourth, the adults and children were so scantily clad I imagine the Catholic Church and other churches had fits when it was released. Fifth and finally, there was not enough of the Bard for the play to make sense. It came off as Shakespeare collides with Ziegfeld's follies. The acting to say the least was over done, exaggerated, and hammy at best. To borrow a title from ... Read More

VHS : King of Jazz
1930's King of Jazz is the best of the early sound cycle of movie studio revues. Very few films shot completely in two-strip Technicolor survive - this is one of them. Warner Bros. probably made the most all-Technicolor films in the early sound era, but since most of them were Vitaphone the films have long since been lost in most cases.

The 1929 and 1930 early sound revues were made by the studios primarily to showcase their talent in an all-talking setting. MGM's "Hollywood Revue of 1929" started the cycle, and did a pretty good job. However, other studios lost sight of the goal and the revues that followed were often clumsily put together and didn't even showcase talent that belonged to the studio.

"The King of Jazz" is a surprise not only because it holds up so well with ... Read More

VHS : Ride Him Cowboy
It'd be hard to argue that this is a western equal to THE SEARCHERS or STAGECOACH, but as a B-western, it's one of the best I've seen. Compared to Wayne's Lone Star films, RIDE HIM, COWBOY is a great picture. This is largely due to the photography and camerawork. There are a couple of really outstanding dolly shots (especially the first shots of the outdoor trial and the meeting of the men after the trial). The photography in the desert is also very nicely done. Whereas some of Wayne's early films have a very low-budget, backlot feel, RIDE HIM, COWBOY makes good use of location photography (which was at least in part recycled from an earlier silent film) to maximize the naturalism of the setting, if not the story.

The story, however, could stand improvement. You really have to suspend disbelief even ... Read More
