VHS : Background to Danger
Sometimes on a dark and stormy night, the only film that will do is a 40's studio generated film noire.....for just those times, I reach for "Background to Danger." This spy thriller, set in an exotic location, has lots of action and plot twists to keep me entertained, but not overwhelmed.

It's the cast, courtesy of the 40's studio-system, that makes this film an often overlooked jewel in the film noire crown. George Raft, though slick-looking, gives a wooden portrayal of a businessman turned spy-guy, but the rest of the cast somehow makes the movie happen around him. Brenda Marshall and Osa Massen's characters are more than adequate as glamorous, mysterious women in the inimitable 40's style. Peter Lorre, the devious Russian and Sidney Greenstreet, the quintessential nasty ... Read More

VHS : Iceland
In the wake of the brilliant Sun Valley Serenade, Fox again cast Sonja with John Payne under the helm of H. Bruce Humberstone. Iceland is not as good as Sun Valley, but her skating is her best. The music is first rate, though the words hilarious(promoting the girls to let soldiers have fun with them, they might not come back hehehe). Sonja proves once again that she was a comic talent, but the stagefarce-plot is much too much at times... However; the musicalnumbers are a treat and u should always watch it for that reason alone.

VHS : Rocketship X-M
Released in 1950, Rocketship X-M (eXpedition Moon) portrays the first manned attempt to reach the moon. Well-made on a small budget, this excellent film is not to be confused with the many low budget flying saucer creature-features to follow throughout the 50s.

The story begins with a press conference -- only minutes before launch, where members of the press are first told of the secret plans to go to the moon, and introduced to the crew of four men and one woman. When a reporter asks about having a woman on the crew, expedition leader Dr. Karl Eckstrom (John Emery) explains that Dr. Lisa Van Horn (Osa Massen) is the best qualified person for the job as she is the chemist who developed the rocket fuel, which must be monitored closely during flight. The rest of the crew includes astronomer Harry Chamberlain ... Read More

VHS : Woman's Face
In the 1940's Joan's career really started to unravel. She was no longer the sweet little working girl. Joan wanted to branch out and show her true acting capabilities, and "A Woman's Face" was her first shot at that, and one of her most ambitious feature presentations!

In this gorgeous black and white film, Joan played Anna Holm, otherwise known as Ingrid Paulson. Anna lived with a severe facial scar that left her disfigured. Joan looked completely different as Anna because she was no longer glamorous or dressed to the nines. Even when she played the poorest working girl, Joan always looked devastatingly beautiful. In "A Woman's Face" she relied on her natural talent of acting to shine through by letting the viewers see a unique and diverse piece of her.

Here are Miss Crawford's personal comments about this ... Read More
