The movie is funny, but also addresses a serious issue of clash of western values and islamic fanaticism. Is it funny and interesting, but also serious and sad.
It is good movie to use in 'movie-clubs' & classes. It can raise understandig for the dificult position of imigrants and their integration into completly strange land and stranger view of the world.

I love this movie. Don't ask me why, I can't even explain it to myself. My only problem with this DVD (and the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) was that there were no captions/subtitles, which would have been greatly appreciated because the dialogue is often very difficult to hear, while the rest of the sound was rather loud at times. Still, I will definitely watch it more than once, and thoroughly enjoy it every time.

VHS : Such a Long Journey
Director Sturla Gunnarsson turns a good novel by Rohinton Mistry, into an extraordinary film, capturing the warmth of family life in a crowded apartment house in Bombay, along with its sights, sounds, and smells. Main character Gustad Noble (Roshan Seth) is a devoted father and husband, a believer in the ceremonies of his Parsi religion, a conscientious worker as a bank supervisor, and a friend who believes in loyalty to those who have helped him.

Gustad and his wife Dilnavaz are trying to lead good lives during the political and social turmoil of Indira Gandhi's rule in the 1970s. India is on the verge of war with the Muslims of Pakistan, and though Gustad is aware of political corruption, he is far more pre-occupied with having his son accepted at a school of technology, doing his job as ... An extremely good Indian film adapted from Anita Desai's book. It shows how India is a real laboratory for multiculturalism and at the same time it reveals a case where one culture is more or less dying in India itself because it is a minority culture based on a minority language language. Luckily it is the official language of Pakistan and this Urdu poetry is praised and appreciated in quite a few foreign countries. The film shows quite well how this old poetry finds it difficult to survive in the modern world of technology and metropolitan living. It has to be collected and saved for future generations and yet it is eroding fast. Parodies are common and the main noble themes are giving way to trite images and situations. The film though does not show the confrontation of the Hindu and Urdu cultures. It reduces the ... Read More

The plot is basically an excuse to chain together the not so many funny bits.

Steve Coogan is a very talented comedian but in todays world he's not stretched. The competition is very poor. Twenty years ago there was a variety of talented and one-off comics in this country. Now, what was once mediocre has been elevated to the level of brilliant. Take the last line in the film. A typical brutal, sledgehammer attempt. The rule of thumb seems to be. A crude reference to body parts will always be funny. It just isn't. Its boring.

In the first ten minutes most people if asked could have written a page summing up the remainder of the plot. Loopholes in the storyline were so many that suspending your disbelief to enjoy the film is more than impossible. Omar Sharif was probably in the film for less than 5 minutes but his performance ... While this film doubtlessly gives realistic insight into the culture shock of a traditional Pakistani man struggling to maintain the customs of his homeland in 1970's England---and to force those same customs onto his assimilating family---what I can't understand is how so many people found this movie to be both heartwarming and comedic. At least that's the billing it got when it was recommended to me by friends, and also how I heard it touted years ago by Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air. The main character here, George Khan, played by India's prolific Om Puri, is among the least sympathetic figures in all of recent cinema, which would be fine if the feeling was he was being set up to be presented that way, but the impression I got was that we were meant to receive him as more of a misguided soul than an abusive tyrant. He beats his wife, alienates his children ... Read More
