VHS : Mighty Aphrodite
Mighty Aphrodite (1995) won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Mira Sorvino, and a nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Woody Allen. Sorvino, the Harvard educated daughter of actor Paul Sorvino, plays a squeaky-voiced, potty mouth hooker. Her character is none too bright, and though she aspires to be an actress, and has appeared in several pornographic films, she is terrible. Somewhat of a stretch, considering that Mira Sorvino is an Academy Award winner, and she graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in East Asian Studies. While at Harvard, she helped found the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones, one of Harvard's premier co-ed a cappella groups, not to mention spending a year of study in Beijing. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and also speaks French. The Oscar win ... Read More

All the men are stupid jerks who screw up their own lives and the lives of those around them. Fortunately for the safety of New York City, all of the women are wise, patient and nurturing, and manage to get the bozos back on track. No wonder my wife thinks this is the best movie of all time!

VHS : Jerusalem
Selma Lagerlöf, the first female Nobel prize winner in literature, is known in Sweden for her extraordinary storytelling gifts. Her novel Jerusalem uses as its historical background the Pietist movement of the early 19th century. This movement can be seen as the beginning of the breakdown of the state church system in Sweden, for it allowed for the possibility that the common man (not woman at this time) could be filled with divine wisdom and vision -- that this was no longer the provenance of clergymen alone. The ramifications of this movement for traditional societal order were breathtaking.
Lagerlöf's novel takes this historical background and sets in its midst a responsible, strong and serious young man, Ingmar Ingmarsson, who has promised his father on his deathbed that he will grow up to be the kind ... Read More

VHS : Look Who's Talking
Most people give PULP FICTION the title of John Travolta's comeback. During the early to mid 80's, John Travolta was less than an A-List celebrity. The movie LOOK WHO'S TALKING was his comeback to the spotlight. This movie catapulted him back to bigger and better things. He went on to do blockbuster films like PULP FICTION, GET SHORTY, BE COOL, among others.

About the movie, it spawned 2 sequels that were great also. And Bruce Willis's delivery was flawless. I can't imagine Mikey sounding any other way. The opening scene of the movie, along with the music, sets the tone for the rest of this raucous comedy. I loved it then and I love it now. Contemporary comedy classic in my opinion.
