VHS : Jesus of Nazareth (3pc)
This video is not as biblically accurate as I was led to believe by the other reviews. I purchased this to augment my bible study teaching so I may be a little tougher on the movie then most people. Dramatic license is taken in several places because of the need to let the viewer know some of the backround as well as the portraying of the actual incidents in Jesus' life. The movie is already 6 hours long so I can understand the necessity of this but some of decisions by the producer are almost ridiculous. Young Jesus is portrayed by a young man with blue eyes, blond hair, and the whitest skin I've ever seen on someone from the middle east. All in all though, the movie has some cool parts and is worth watching. I would recommend it.

VHS : Ivanhoe (1982)
I am so SAD about having to say negative things about this film. I'm a devout disciple of Ivanhoe, and a mesmerized fan of Anthony Andrews, so it feels like treachery to say that I've never been so disappointed in a film...What a CAST. But such meaningless drivel for dialog... True, this version DID include Athelstane, but to what purpose? He added nothing, he was totally incidental---well, blast it, WILFRED was incidental...And, bless her heart, that cute little girl didn't look remotely Saxon...And lovely Olivia looks more as if she's distressed and confused by the quality of the production than by deep love for Wilfred or impending immolation...By the time they tie her to the stake, she looks like she just wants out under any circumstance. I BELIEVED Elizabeth Taylor in the old version ... Read More

VHS : The Bastard; Part 1 of the Kent Family Chronicles
andrew stevens (son of stella stevens) stars as philip kent in this first mini-series based on the john jakes kent family novels.
stevens is a french boy who learns that he is the title person after finding out that his real father is an english nobelman and heads to england to claim his birthright. his fathers family doesn't intend to let him have anything and tries to have him killed. this causes philip to flee to america, under the name philip kent , and gets him involved in the fight for liberty.
this is a very good show, even if it mainly plays like a soap opera, and stevens is quite good as philip. give this one a chance and you may like it.

VHS : Black Christmas
Finally seeing it after all too long, I was glad to see that Black Christmas really holds up. The story of a regular group of sorority girls stalked and murdered by a madman is very much a chilling, suspenseful and engrossing tale. What really works best is how the killer, who is perhaps called Billy, is kept entirely a mystery. We don't know where he comes from, why he does what he does, and often see things from his perspective up in the dark attic. His rants, screams, whispers, glances and shadow is what makes for a really frightening film to this very day.

There are weaker parts to the film though. Margot Kidder is at the forefront of weak sex jokes, and there's also a lot of goofing off with police detectives trying to crack the case.

Overall, I can highly recommend Black Christmas. ... Read More

Psycho IV is basically an attempt to squeeze one last movie from the series, and keep the Bates character alive. Norman Bates is listening to a talk show on the radio when they just happen to begin talking about matricide - killing one's mother. They are interviewing a doctor whose career and sphere of expertise deals with the same subject. Norman seems to be a bit irritated with the direction of the show, so he calls in to give his history.

Quickly enough it is discovered that Norman killed his mother, and kept her corpse for the conversational value - basically Weekend at Bernie's with murder. Medically speaking, Norman is a friggin loon, and a danger to society. It's this complete insanity, and the suggestions from his "mother", which led him to being a schizophrenic, cross-dressing, Freudianly jealous, psychopathic ... Read More

VHS : The Man with Bogart's Face
All Bogie fans, in fact ALL lovers of classics should see THE MAN WITH BOGART'S FACE. It stars Robert Sacchi, who is an uncanny double for Mr. B. in size, face, hair, mannerisms and voice. Watching him in this movie is like seeing Bogie alive again.

The story opens at a plastic surgeon's office. The gauze wrappings are removed from our hero's face; he sits in front of a TV that's showing the last scene of THE MALTESE FALCON. As the surgically-created Bogart examines his visage in the mirror with a characteristic twitch, we hear Bogie's famous "you're going over/because you're partners" soliloquy coming from the nearby television.

"Bogart's Face" is packed with references to classic cinema, both spoken and visually. The climactic house of mirrors shootout in Orson Welles' THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI is reenacted at Hollywood's ... Read More
