VHS : Night Falls on Manhattan
Like all other films directed by Sidney Lumet, this is a solid, no-nonsense, intelligent police drama. In my opinion, Andy Garcia exhibits one of his finest performances in this film. Unfortunately, the 1.85:1 widescreen DVD is not enhanced for 16:9 TVs, although the picture and sound are of high quality.

2.Front starring: Woody Allen, Zero Mostel, Herschel Bernardi, Michael Murphy, Andrea Marcovicci

The various blanket infringements on the rights of American citizens and others since the criminal events of 9/11 hardly represent the first time that the American government has seen fit to curtail those rights. The Palmer Raids roundup of reds, radicals and foreigners in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution at the tail end of World War I comes to mind. As done the subject of this film, the red scare against communist and other labor radicals after World War II with the onset of the Cold War against the Soviet Union, a former ally. The name of this period narrowly is given in the history books as the McCarthy witch-hunt era, although that hardly dose justice to the widespread political paranoia, high and low, in America at that time. The signature event was the execution of the Rosenbergs, Julius ... Read More

VHS : If It's Tuesday This Must Be Belgium
What a sensational find! The film is a snapshot of a much simpler, and nicer time.

This was a well shot, lovely looking film - with a best-in-class-cast.

Suzanne is the focus here, and is 100% authentic playing a lady searching for meaning in her life. The stories of all the cast build upon each other, and ring true-- you do care.

This film was a benchmark, made at the end of the 60's with a sensitive touch. Excellent in every way.

60's star Donovan provides the haunting theme song which is used in several ways and tempo's as the flim plays out.

The yummy costumes are right-on for the period, and the shots of a very groovy Europe can't be beat.

For those that remember, UNIVERSAL liked this theme well enough to shoot a TV pilot with ... Read More

I remember as a non-Catholic little afro boy in a Catholic-parochial school, being sat to the side with a few other students who weren't Catholic, in the school's church pews, with the nun telling the Catholic children to do their confessions with the priest while the kids doomed for hell sit over there. I remember making a challenge to get that Eucharist one day as I went in line with the Catholic kids to receive the BODY oF CHRIST because I deserved it just like they did: what? tastes like an unsalted cracker!! It was this movie that opened my eyes to know that I could have a relationship and speak to God Almighty then stead of having to go through a priest. When I saw the monk talking to God when he woke up in the morning I WAS SHOCKED!! I didn't know you could do that! At the age of 11 my spiritual eyes were ... Read More

The only reason I want this movie is because it was filmed here in our little town and my son was one of the "extras" in it. It has been very difficult to find. As for the movie - it's funny in spots and grotesque in spots. It's certainly not the worst movie I have ever seen nor was it the best. It's not something that I would ordinarily buy.

7.Legendary Champions starring: Norman Rose, Georges Carpentier, Jack Dempsey, Wyatt Earp, James J. Jeffries

VHS : Pinocchio in Outer Space
This dippy sci-fi/fairy-tale hybrid from Belgium takes Carlo Collodi's little wooden boy and blasts him straight to Mars. After a few minutes of this kiddie schlock, you'll probably feel like getting blasted yourself.

_Pinocchio in Outer Space_ does take pains to remain scientifically plausible, by 1960s standards at least -- with one notable exception: The film's antagonist is a jet-propelled space whale named Astro. Whenever he appears, the film flies giddily off the rails, entering what can only be described as an alternate, psychedelic universe.

Director Ray Goossens lifts jokes, character business and entire scenes from the 1940 Disney feature. But to be fair, the Disney studio may have done some borrowing, too, when it launched a whole pod of flying space whales to Respighi's "Pines of Rome" ... Read More

9.The Joe Louis Story starring: Coley Wallace, Hilda Simms, Paul Stewart, James Edwards, John Marley

VHS : The Joe Louis Story
The casting was excellent. A boxer named Corey Wallace played Joe Louis. He looked like him, except that he had a belly. Louis was trim. In some of the big fights, Schmeling, Baer, Carnera, they show actual fight footage, so you see the real Joe Louis. The actor who played Louis's trainer Jack Blackburn was a young guy in a ridiculous bald wig. The movie begins with Marciano beating Louis up, then goes to the happier, earlier days. It's a good movie about a fighter who has his supporters for greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. I shut it off rather than watch the sad parts at the end.
