VHS : Private Lives
Norma Shearer is superb in this classic, hilarious, devastatingly honest film from the brilliant Noel Coward play. Norma's roots in silent film is read on her face in an exquisite moment early in the scenario, in which she slowly, agonizingly, then tenderly, then with horror, realizes that she and her new husband are located in a hotel suite next door to her ex, and his new bride. The play of emotions on Shearer's face, from shock, to dread, to agonized pain, then tender warmth and remorse, and back to horror and panic about what she must next do, is worthy of an Oscar, in and of itself. This film made me worship Norma Shearer as one of the greatest acting talents, ever. And the play itself is so warm, so realistic, so tender, so honest about the crazed reality of love. The screaming fight ... Read More

VHS : Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934)
This beautiful production from the early 1930's of a dark shadow hanging over the promise of glorious love and happiness is perhaps Norma Shearer's lovliest performance. The romance between poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett was filmed with a class and meticulous care only MGM could muster. Under Sidney Franklin's direction, William Daniels' photography, and the period flourish provided by Cedric Gibbons, this became one of the greatest romantic dramas ever to be filmed.

Shearer loses her modern slinky charm and projects a luminous class as Elizabeth Barrett, a shining soul living with illness in a house strangled of love by her cruel and repressed father, played to horrible perfection by Charles Laughton. Her lifeline is her continuing correspondence with fellow poet Robert Browning. ... Read More

VHS : Marie Antoinette (1938)
Marie Antoinette of Austria (Norma Shearer) is to marry. Her King will be Louis XVI (Robert Morley) of France. Her excitement soon turns to dispair when she realizes that her new husband is the joke of the family with the inability to produce an heir. After years of solitude, she begins to enjoy her wealth by attending parties and galavanting with the royal family. Unfortunately, she puts her trust into the wrong people including those with a thirst for her power. Slowly, the people of France begin to act on their unrest and soon Marie Antoinette is void of a throne and in fear for her life.

Shearer seemed destined to play this role, and it is one of the films she is best remembered for. There is no doubt that her connections with studio head Irving Thalberg who was also her husband held some sway over her getting ... Read More

I have watched this movie many times. I am very intrigued by the acting and how it different it compares to today's acting, the runway show, the styles, everything. Although, I'm pretty sure if my hubby cheated on me, we'd be done...otherwise, this is a movie right? I loved it!

VHS : Divorcee (1930)
"The Divorcee" is a movie that risks a lot and rewards us with much more. The movie tackles some big issues in a most frank way, at least for 1930. Had the movie been made a few years later, we would have seen a vastly different picture.

Most people have only heard of this movie, few have seen it. Film buffs have only know the movie as "that one Norma Shearer won the Oscar for". But it is a little more than that.

The movie looks at double-standards in society. Jerry (Shearer) and Ted (Chester Morris) are young and in love. They surprise everyone at a pasrty when they announce they are going to be married. This news especially upsets Paul (Conrad Nagel) whom had planned to marry Jerry himself.

Three years later, while celebrating their anniversary Jerry discovers that Ted had an affair, he assures ... Read More

I am not a big movie buff, but purchased this film because I am a fan of silent film star Henry B. Walthall. Walthall is only in the film for the first seven minutes and then his character dies. Rather than losing interest in the film, however, I kept watching and found it very enjoyable. It is a very innovative film, based on the Eugene O'Neill play, that includes thoughts of the characters that are audible to the audience. The main character is Nina Leeds (Norma Shearer). Nina is a very obsessive, neurotic woman who controls the hearts of three men while pining away for her dead fiance Gordon, killed in the Great War. Nina continues to control the lives of her three suitors (one of which is played by Ralph Morgan, brother of the Wizard of Oz). She enters a marriage with a man she does not love and, due to a secret curse in his bloodline, cannot ... Read More

VHS : Smilin Through (1932)
this is one of my very favorite movies! The whole cast is wonderful! Since everyone has already raved about Norma and Frederick's performances, I'm going to rave about Leslie's. There is a scene, in the flashback, where we see the night before the fatal wedding. John and Moonyean sneak away and have a lighthearted, romantic conversation. The dialogue may sound corny coming out of someone else's mouths ( "wouldnt it be wonderful if every time I opened my eyes, you were there?" or "after tonight, there'll be no more partings, no more goodbyes, will there my sweet?") but coming from Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer's mouths, we dont cringe. In fact, we all sincerely go "AW!" he is so adorable in that scene, that when Moonyean is shot, and he is holding her and we see the depths of despair and anguish in his eyes, our heart breaks for him!

He is ... Read More

I think this is another one of Gables funniest performances.Ive seen it a few times and enjoyed it everytime. It definetly is a must see for any Gable fan or anyone who hasnt seen much of Gable. True that the movie may not be very artistic but FAST TALKING, LIGHT HEARTED,CONFIDENT,FRIENDLY GABLE always does it for me, especially when we live in a time where movies have gotten very ''artistic" but lack everything else. I'm always charmed by Mr. Gables quality of an "easy going" fellow always taking life lightly, a great example and inspiration to me. Norma Shearer was also enjoyable to me and she does go over the top on the second half, however it is still enjoyable to watch her.Anyway I hope they release this one and the rest of Gables movies on DVD because I'm ready to purchase...

VHS : A Free Soul
This film will probably never come out on DVD since it really doesn't have the kind of compelling screenplay or dialogue that still draws a large general audience like "It Happened One Night" does, for example. However, if you are a serious student of the early talkies and pre-code entertainment in particular, it is essential viewing. It has a great cast. Lionel Barrymore plays alcoholic defense attorney Stephen Ashe in a role that won him an academy award, and Norma Shearer plays his daughter Jan, the "Free Soul". Barrymore's performance is great, and he has the best lines of anyone in the film. He does a great job of projecting guilt over and shock at his daughter's behavior as well as giving us an idea of why he feels he must drink -"I must drink the way other men must breathe", he says at one point. Also, James Gleason shows why he was one of the great character actors of the 30's and 40's ... Read More
