VHS : Black Rain
I found a used DVD on eBay for $35. It wasn't worth it. The image is letterboxed, but so small that you have to blow it up to resolution-killing proportions. I also own the VHS and laserdisc of "Black Rain." The tape offers a MUCH better image. The laserdisc gives the best results of all. I am outraged at the prices being asked here. I really hope this great movie will be re-released with proper care, and that the people who want to rip you off will be left holding the bag.

VHS : Death Quake
This film is one of the "great" Japanese non-monster-oriented disaster movies following in the footsteps of the 1974 Universal movie, "Earthquake" starring Charlton Heston & Ava Gardner. DeathQuake (AKA "Jishin Retto", "Magnitude 7.9", "Megaforce 7.9", "Earthquake Archipelago", & "Earthquake") was actually, I think, produced in 1975 or 1980, following the other "big" Japanese disaster movie of 1973, "Nippon Chinbotsu", or "The Submersion Of Japan", (which some may know better as "Tidal Wave" in which the film was cut and had scenes added with Lorne Greene for release in the US) and the 1975 film "Tokyo Gulf Burns" or "Conflagration," and follwed by the film, "Fukkatsu No Hi", or "Day of Ressurection" (AKA "Virus" Starring George Kennedy).

Anyway, DeathQuake is about a seismologist, ... Read More

VHS : Himatsuri
"Himatsuri," is not a film for everyone. If anything the film can be very slow and confusing at times. However, for those who have seen a number of Japanese films: I recommend this particular film with caution. The film was directed by Mitsuo Yanagimachi, and is accompanied with the haunting and primal musical score of Toru Takemitsu. The film takes place at an isolated fishing village which is trying to modernize. But modernization comes with a price. At the center of this modernization we are introduced to the films main antagonist, Tatsuo (Kinya Kitaoji).

Tatsuo is a Shinto, as are his neighbors who want the land he owns to be sold to help with this new marine park. However, Tatsuo is very stubborn and refuses to sell out. Moreover, he is very self-destructive by nature. A nature I might ... Read More

VHS : Zatoichi Blind Swordsman's Revenge
This film stands out for its swordsplay, difficult to do considering all Zatoichi films feature superlative swordsplay. This one in particular shows what Shintaro Katsu can really do with a blade. The story here is not the strongest in the series when it really should be, considering Zato's murdered master is central to the plot. Still a solid entry, beautifully done. Director Akira Inoue consistently turned out some of the better Zatoichi films (in my opinion).
