VHS : Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House
Good Old Fashion humor. A couple of Film classic scenes ( the Building Consultant telling Gary Grant "tear it down" or the painting Foreman listening to Myrna Loy explain in great detail the shades of colors that she wants the rooms painted and the Foreman telling the painters "Red, Blue, Green and Yellow"

VHS : Revenge of the Creature
'Revenge of the Creature' is a pretty good sequel to the original but, there are several reasons for it not receiving a 5 star rating like the first movie. First of all, I find the changes to the Creature's head piece a big mistake. The "fish-like" eyes on the original were replaced with "bug-like" eyes or bulging eyes and the head is very fat and round shaped. This makes the Creature look sort of fake to me. They also didn't bring Ben Chapman back to play "The Gillman" on land in this film. I found the new actor to be too stereotypical of these rubber suit monster films as he stomped around like child throwing a fit. I'm not trashing this film but, I wanted to point out some of these flaws as without them this would have been another 5 stars film. I love these movies and the Creature trilogy is a ... Read More

VHS : Creature From the Black Lagoon
The Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of those classic 50s drive in horror flicks that abounded during that time. It is still fun and I enjoy it. The picture and the black and white is wonderful. I only wish they had included the 3-D version too. I saw that at the movie theatre about 3 years ago and that was fun!

5.Young Man With a Horn starring: Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, Doris Day, Hoagy Carmichael, Juano Hernandez

VHS : Young Man With a Horn
Any film starring the great Kirk Douglas is usually good and often great. YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN is no exception. Douglas does an o.k. job portraying the pseudo Bix Beiderbecke character, Rick Martin, but he just can't mimic a trumpet player that well (lip positions, breathing, [...] etc.) The film follows a typical Hollywood mellodrama style, a guy struggling, succeeding, descending into personal demons and then rescue by a gal or a self realiztion. The real star of this film is the brilliant soundtrack by the incomparable Harry James with the equally brilliant Doris Day handling the vocals. I am now waiting for a good biofilm of Harry James as his life covered all the aspects of a rags to riches drama in addition to some of the best music ever recorded.

6.Can-Can starring: Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jourdan, Juliet Prowse
directed by: Walter Lang
April 21, 1993
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Can-Can
CAN-CAN is a well-realized picture but to me it falls just a leeedle short of a 5 rating. I'd give it four-and-a-half if I could.

STRENGTHS: Beautiful color, which manages to be flamboyant and engaging both. Intriguing fantasy sequence (presented as the music-hall's take on Adam and Eve), some terrific ballet dances from Juliet Prowse and Shirley McLaine; in fact all the dancers were great. The colorful can-can scenes are an important part of the film and use widescreen to great effect. Wonderful Cole Porter songs, most of them previously written but a delight nonetheless.

WEAKNESSES: A little long -- it was shown in theaters as a "road show" including Overture, Intermission and leaving-the-theater music, all of which made it to the DVD. The Todd-AO widescreen process (ratio 2.2:1) shows a bit of ... Read More

VHS : Mole People
One of the advantages of being an old fart is that you can look at old movies with an unjaudiced eye. You can appreciate them for what they were/are instead of getting overly concerned about whether or not the special effects are "believable" or whether you can see the zippers in the monster's costume or whether the acting is Oscar worthy or not. In short, you can just watch the movie and have a good time. I've always had a good time with the old movies from the 1950's, and one of the flicks I've enjoyed consistently is THE MOLE PEOPLE.

Now possibly one of the reasons I got an extra kick out of the movie was that it was the first horror film I saw after learning about the Catholic Church's list of condemned films. MOLE PEOPLE was on that list, and even though our family wasn't comprised of very many practicing Catholics, ... Read More

VHS : 3 Stooges: In Orbit
Poking fun at sci-fi movies and Martian invasions (both done sillier in their own right), the Stooges do a film-within-a-film as they play themselves as T.V. stars getting involved in some weird doings.
Winding up at the mansion of a kooky but well-intended professor (Stooge short veteran Emil Sitka), it's soon revealed that actual Martians are hiding away in the place as they await the completion of the professor's latest invention: an odd-looking helicopter-tank-submarine-rocket which the professor hopes to sell to the military. A demonstration goes predictably disastrous with the Stooges behind the wheel, as they demolish army facilities and then take a "joy ride" across the countryside---even managing to accidentally attach an atom bomb during repairs! Eventually, the boys clash with the Martians and thwart their plans to destroy Earth, ... Read More
