VHS : Clara's Heart
This film is more than it wants to be. The critic and cynic in me would gleefully join Mr. Marshall Fine in enumerating the many ways this film tries to manipulate its audience. First on my list would be the score by Dave Grusin which acts as a musical leash to pull the audience where they probably would have gone anyway. But that is where I will stop, because although the film does everything in its power to convince us it's the cinematic equivalent of Prozac, it betrays this image by containing subtle, powerful insights that set it apart from its saccharine ilk. There IS something different here, you just have to know where to look. Its not so much about what Clara does for David, a lot of his problems remain after her departure... What is special about "Clara's Heart" is that its about the indestructible ... Read More

VHS : For Our Children
Disney's "For Our Children: The Concert" is a video that I think every music teacher should show to their students. The video is also great for health teachers, too. It is important that young people are informed about AIDS. Such topics as how AIDS is contracted are discussed in the special program. The students will also enjoy the rap versions of nursery rhymes. All in all, a must-have for music and health teachers!

VHS : My Antonia
This is one of the worst film adaptations of a book, overall, I have ever seen. For example, in Cather's novel, Jim's grandfather is an understanding peacemaker and appreciates Antonia's strength and independence. In the film, he's a grouchy snob who looks down on Antonia for being a foreign farmer! It's as if the writers never read the novel but instead scanned badly-written crib notes. The only parts worth watching might be Jim and Lena during Jim's University days.

I bought the DVD of Starship Troopers for my wife (believe it or not). She had a video tape of Starship Troopers but the VCR ate it and I am surprising her with the DVD for Christmas. I am very satisfied with the price and the shipping time was ok.

VHS : Cold Sassy Tree
This is a pleasant little Hallmark Hall of Fame film based upon the book of the same name by Olive Ann Burns. It a film that takes place in a very small, sleepy southern town around the turn of the century where an elderly gentleman, a Mr. Blakeslee (Richard Widmark), runs a general store in which he employs a very attractive, middle-aged milliner with the unlikely name of Miss Love Simpson. She is an outsider and a non-southerner, an attractive independent woman who is looked at a bit askance by the town's residents.

The town is turned upside down when three weeks after the death of his wife, Mr. Blakeslee proposes to Miss Love, and she accepts. They get married, much to the chagrin of the Blakeslee family who must grin and bear it. They are outraged that he is recently widowed and that she is young enough to be his daughter. ... Read More

VHS : Joan of Arc (1999)
If you are looking for a roller coaster ride with popcorn, watch the Messenger, which isn't a bad movie but a wildly innacurate one. If you want to see a film that blends history with action, "Joan of Arc" is your movie. Not perfect, but far more realistic, with Leelee looking and acting a lot more like the teen-age Joan than others have. This doesn't rush through the story as the Messenger does, and doesn't portray her as the gibbering fanatic the other movie does. Joan was always convinced God spoke to her (no matter what the reality was), but she was rational about it, keenly intelligent, and remarkably astute - not the behavior of a raving loon or someone affected by schizophrenia. She also hated violence, only seeing it as necessary to throw the English out of France, and wept openly during battles she participated in at both French and ... Read More
