VHS : Cat Ballou
This film is a strange one for me as I remember I actually hated it the first time I watched it years back but when I started looking seriously at old films and especially Westerns I began to appreciate "Cat Ballou" a lot more and now after seeing this a few times, I have to say that this is an excellent, hilarious spoof on Westerns and the jokes age very well even to today. As a big fan of all kinds of music myself, I really appreciated the role that Nat King Cole in one of his last performances ever before his death by lung cancer together with Stubby Kaye in the hilarious sung narrative that runs throughout the film. It's amazing what was accomplished on clearly a tiny budget and I thought the cast was very good and especially Lee Marvin was the alcoholic gunfighter.

VHS : China Gate
I'm giving this VHS version 4 stars instead of the 5 it really deserves because the current cropped VHS version does a grave injustice to Samuel Fuller's visual style and his creative use of cinemascope. When the film was available on 16mm I used to run it in my Samuel Fuller class to show students the type of innovative work several films exhibited in the 1950s. As it stands at the moment, the VHS cropped, pan and scan version represents a travesty of an outstanding film.

As the other reviewer has noted, CHINA GATE is one of the first American films to deal with the Indo-China conflict that formed the prequel to the Vietnam War. But the casting of Angie Dickinson and Lee Van Cleef as Eurasians is not as bizarre as several reviewers noted. Lucky Legs (Dickinson) has been abandoned ... Read More

When will MGM get their finger out and release "RICH YOUNG & PRETTY" and "SMALL TOWN GIRL" on DVD, after all this is the 21st century, we now have a better viewing medium than VHS tapes.

These would have to be two of the least known but best loved movies that came out of the '50's.

For those that havent yet seen these movies, beg borrow or steal them to see great dancing, fantastic singing, and so so acting, but are must have in any collection.

1957's ISTANBUL came late in Errol Flynn's career and perhaps that's why I like it. It combines Errol Flynn's tried and true histrionics now tempered with a world-weary demeanor with new cinematic filmmaking of the 1950s including Cinemascope under Joseph Pevney's taught direction and William Daniels evocatively suspenseful cinematography. I truly enjoy the more relaxed pace of this film of mystery and foreign intrigue. Unfortunately this is yet another film that failed to launch the career of Cornell Borchers (NEVER SAY GOODBYE with Rock Hudson).

5.Nat King Cole Story starring: Nat King Cole

Many music DVDs offer poor value, but not this one. The number of songs is large and the performances are of excellent quality. A tremendous buy for Cole fans.
