Granted some reviewers have created a de facto plot line by arbitrarily deciding that some parts are reality, some dream & some symbolism, etc. but they ignore large parts that can't be fitted into their story line. It's important to note the film started out to be a TV series, its seems a reasonable assumption the movie was cobbled together out of scenes that were originally intended to be used in separate episodes with a different plot. I guess Lynch thought every scene was so precious he had to use them in regardless. The movie could have been cut down by 30-45 minutes and not lost a thing.

Sadly rewatching the movie didn't clear up a thing, I only saw more problems the second time. Can someone explain -

Having been a nun during these times, I found the experiences fairly true to life. The VERY LAST scene was a heartbreaker. Very well done.

was glad to have been able to rent this one. The story of Ned Kelley is a really good one and (IMO) Heath did an excellent job (as always) in the role. It was sad to see how Ned was treated...and just like Heath...was gone way too soon. I can't say this is my fave flick, but I'd recommend it - it's a good watch.

VHS : Outsider (2002)
This movie is based on the book The Outsider by Penelope Williamson. The book was excellent, and the movie is a faithful and well-rendered adaption of the story. Amish mother and widow Rachel is getting by, missing her husband and trying to keep their ranch going with the help of her young son, but generally content with her life. Then gunslinger Johnny shows up. He's wounded and needs help, and she nurses him back to health. To pay her back he agrees to stay and help out on the farm during their busy season. The two fall in love despite her strict religion and society and his difficult past -- a past that comes back to haunt them all.

Williamson's characters seem very real, and you want these two strikingly different people to find happiness together. The acting in the film is excellent, ... Read More

The Shaft (Dick Maas, 2001)

The Shaft, also known as Down, is one of those incredible train wrecks that makes you wonder how so very many recognizable people found themselves attached to such a godawful movie. Dutch director Maas (probably best known on this side of the pond for Amsterdamned) revisits his own De Lift (1983), but with a much more ambitious scope and an American setting.

The plot: Mark Newman (Twin Peaks' criminally underutilized James Marshall), an elevator repairman, begins to suspect something's hinky, when the elevators in New York's Millennium Building start acting weird. Accompanied by perky reporter Jennifer Evans (Ring's Naomi Watts), he has to figure out what's going on. Yeah, that's pretty much it, with most of the movie dedicated to the elevator's antics, ... "She blooms she blooms and in May so hurt" Mark Ruffalo's Jack says to Naomi Watts' Edith as they make their way into the woods to make love for the first time, starting their affair. "In May I was alone," she answers, referring to her husband Hank's infidelity. So rare are films that show characters change (some too little too late, but at least they finally come to it). Probably the most beautifully scored film I have ever seen - the singular cello and fluttering piano notes blend through like a transparent, delicate cloth, and sounds from one scene often flow over into the next, causing a beautiful, dreamy continuity. Look for reasoning of what is underneath the affairs of these four characters instead of the affairs themselves. Yes, the affairs are tragic and destructive, but it isn't enough to simply judge them ... Read More
