VHS : Other Side of the Mountain 2
I enjoyed Pt 2 far better than part one. The chemisty between Hasset and Bottoms was very obvious and worked really well in making you feel like you were watching them actually fall in love with one another. I am updating my video collection and can't find a DVD version of this movie for the life of me. Makes me very frustrated that so many "shoot them up" type movies with gratuitous violence are immediatey put in DVD format while a gentle love story with a solid message regarding disabled people mainstreaming into our society cannot be made available in the modern DVD format. The movie sends a great message to people (especially disabled phobs) and should be made into DVD format so kids, teens and young adults with DVD players can view and learn a few valuable lessons in tolerance, how love ... VHS : Proud Men
Peter Strauss, an underated actor, who has given numerous outstanding performances, is paired with the legendary Charlton Heston in a superb drama of a the younger Strauss returning home with wife and son in tow to be with his father, played by Heston, who is dying. The conflict between the two men arises because of Strauss's character's disavowal of the Vietnam war, in which he served. Heston sees this as cowardice and his view is shared by many in the conservative town, who view Strauss with open contempt. The father/son dynamic gradually builds to a shattering climax that is both beautifully written and magnificently portrayed. This is a small gem, a minor masterpiece, that has been sadly overlooked - because its relevance to our world today, to its view of war, of what makes a man, a community, ... Read More

VHS : Bus Riley's Back in Town
While set in a specific time & place, Bus Riley's dilemma is a timeless one: how does a young, yearning, intelligent person break free of a restrictive society & its many alluring entrapments, and become an individual, following an individual path? Michael Parks delivers a rich, nuanced performance, ably supported by a fine cast. Ann-Margret is a delight as the luscious ex-girlfriend who draws Bus back into her very pleasurable web for awhile -- the film is smart enough not to make her a villain, but simply someone who has it all (or so it seems) but knows that she's still missing something from life. And both Janet Margolin & Kim Darby show why they should have had bigger careers than they did: both are fresh, believable, empathetic. Not everything is neatly tied up by the end, but new possibilities ... Read More

VHS : Matters of the Heart
I know that giving this melodramatic tearjerker a 5-star rating is very generous, but I can't help but love this movie! Jane Seymour, even with glasses and trying to look older, is stunningly beautiful in this tale of a doomed romance.

Christopher Gartin plays Steven Harper, an 18-year-old college student who feels a passion for piano playing. The problem is that in his small town there is no one who shares his passion, especially not his father who was crippled in the Vietnam War. Steven feels hopelessly lost...until he meets the world-reknowned pianist Hadley Norman (Jane Seymour), who happens to move into town.

At first, Hadley wants nothing to do with Steven, because she's a recluse and is busy working on writing a concerto. But when she hears his playing, she decides to become a "tutor" ... Read More

VHS : Toys in the Attic
The performances by Dean Martin, Geraldine Page, and Wendy Hiller are all top-notch, and they make this movie a good rainy afternoon entertainment. There is also the beautiful black and white cinematography that always shows off New Orleans well. But as my title for this review suggests, this movie aspires to hit a target but misses. I don't know the original play, so I don't know if the problem lies in the censorship of the early 1960s that sometimes afflicted "spicey" plays making the transition to the screen. Given some of the movie's theme's, however, I wouldn't be surprised if part of the film's weakness stems from the facat that key plot and thematic developments were made obscure so as not to offend audiences of a more "sensitive" era.

Now to the problems. To begin with, Yvette Mimieux's character ... Read More

My mom had told me about this movie recently, I remembered seeing it as a kid. The title came across my list of Movies To See and I decided to give it a whirl. I found the material dated, unrealistic and rather annoying.

Richard Benjamin plays a middle class library employee in New York state who meets Ali MacGraw, one of the most beautiful women of all time, at a country club swimming pool one summer day. He falls for the siren (and who wouldn't with her gorgeousness) and they begin a happy, carefree summer romance. Of course her parents, upper class and Jewish who had risen up thanks to MacGraw's father's plumbing business, do not approve. When alone, they assure each other "She'll get tired of him", and "It won't last". MacGraw doesn't seem very serious about much of anything at this point in life, Benjamin ... Read More

SPOILERS AHEAD!

This is a nice surprise of a movie--heartfelt without being smarmy, intelligent, literate, witty, quirky, and shot in a lovely wooded area. It's about a man in New York who comes back to his native Montana to care for his ailing grandfather. The man is also gay but unattached, though an old flame tries to get together with him again. A more fascinating character is called Pike (Eric Schweig), a Native American who runs the general store but is scared of what he feels for the prodigal fellow, played by Arye Gross. The townspeople turn out to be very warm and tolerant in regard to gay relationships, and they are quite supportive in many respects.

The ending is just a slight letdown: why didn't Arye come clean with Pike instead of letting him think he had gone back to NY for good? ... Read More
