VHS : No Time for Sergeants
It arrived in a reasonable amount of time. The condition was ok, not great but ok. It did appear as if it came from a video rental company which was a bit troubling. All in all it was an ok experience although I think for the condition a bit overpriced.

VHS : Hustler
Dramatic, sometimes downright melodramatic. There's something kind of James Deanish in Newman's character - naive, brash, arrogant - old school 50s tough guy. Shot in black and white, it still feels distinctly early 60s, and comes off as a modern tragedy (if not melodrama). You can feel elements of 50s drama merging with the rough-hewn existentialism of the early 60s, though it's a drama in every sense of the word - nothing twilight zone about this one, except the way characters seem to resemble Rod Serling a little bit in the way they talk. I didn't realize until the end, Paul Newman's financial banker from the underworld is played by a youthful George C Scott, who does a great job. Paul himself (as mentioned) sometimes feels a bit over the top, as does his lady love (an interesting character played ... Read More

VHS : One Third of a Nation
The plot of this movie is poorly written. The landlord of an apartment building is harrassed by tenants who start fires in the building by smoking and vandalism. The arson activity is justified by the dwellers of the building as retaliation for the condition of the buiding. None of the tenants has bothered to complain to the landlord or file a complaint with the city until after one of the residents sets fire to the building. The picture quality was just passable and the sound had background problems on the vhs copy from Vci. This may have been due to the fact that this was a Paramount film from the 1930's.

VHS : Three for the Show
Julie (Betty Grable) and Vernon Lowndes (Gower Champion) are a great team. He writes 'em and she plays 'em on the stage, but their team is incomplete. Julie's former husband Marty Stewart (Jack Lemmon) used to co-write the shows, but he was killed during the war, or at least that is what everyone thinks. In reality, Marty was marooned on an island; it was another Martin Stewart that died. Julie and Vernon are in for the shock of their lives when Marty returns and anticipates home sweet home, but finds himself involved in a case of bigamy.

This film has some great music, especially the Gershwin and Porter songs. Unfortunately, most of the musical sequences come off as bizarre thanks to the way they suddenly appear as if out of nowhere. For example, it takes some time to adjust to the fact that the film ... Read More
