VHS : Anatomy of a Murder
I've been watching the entire Otto Preminger catalog lately, and I got around to seeing what is arguably his most famous film. Seeing it again makes me realise that it's a masterpiece of tension, performances, dialogue, and cinematography.

There is so much to like about this film. Nothing here in the trial or the characterisations is present in black and white (there's even a dialogue by Stewart to a potential witness about how people aren't black and white). It is full blown ambiguity, resulting in a far more grown up and mature film than most current courtroom dramas are. It is also refreshingly un-PC, unlike modern courtroom dramas. I like to constrast this film with overblown, incredibly melodramatic shows like The Practice, which I used to watch simply because it was ... Read More

VHS : Shake Hands With the Devil
James Cagney made according my personal opinion, a tour de force performance and his most superb artistic achievement, personifying the leader of IRA. Through the innocent gaze of a naïve student who sudden and accidentally becomes involved in rebel activities, Cagney will exert on him a spelling influence but gradually he will realize the core of the human being behind the mask: a murderous fanatic.

A ravishing jewel of Michael Anderson, one of the best and remarkable British filmmakers ever.

VHS : Darby's Rangers
The hardest part of writing a review for this movie was selecting a myriad of titles that filled my imagination: "Fell on its Own Plunger," or "Navy Recruiting Film," or "Pull the Pin on this One and Release the Charging Handle, " or "Weapons Free at the Movie Marquee."

Although I have a great memory for the good things, I also have one for those which are bad, and this is bad. It's bad enough to make John Wayne's "The Green Berets" look like a Cannes Festival Film Classic, and this ranks as the worst military movie I have ever seen, being right down there with "The Blue Max."

It is 1942 and Colonel Darby played by James Garner is marked as a "comer" in the army. That was the term of the day for someone who was destined for the stars, at least on his epaulettes. Darby wants to form an elite ... Read More

VHS : Ice Station Zebra
A Russian spy satellite comes down at the North Pole and it's a race between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. to see who gets there first. Rock Hudson as the U.S. sub commander, Patrick MacGoohan as a mysterious British agent, Ernest Borgnine as a Russian defector and Jim Brown as a hard nosed Marine officer. Not quite up to the novel from which it was adapted but still, an entertaining window on a past era: the Cold War. Also starring Tony Bill as a young Marine Lt. and Alf Kjellin as a Russian officer.

Finding Forrester (2000)

Sean Connery is William Forrester, a brilliant novelist who published one book and then stopped publishing. Newcomer Rob Brown is Jamal Wallace. He is a black kid, or man of 16 years, living in the Bronx. He lives for basketball, but is a voracious reader, and he writes in journals. He keeps them in his backpack. He thinks he is a basketball player, but he was born to be a writer.

On a dare, he is supposed to sneak into some old man's apartment, and steal something. He roams the house and takes a knife. He's about to leave when startled, he leaves his backpack behind. When he later recovers it, the writings in his journals have been red penciled. So begins an unlikely friendship. Or perhaps more of a student to teacher relationship.

Meanwhile, when he excels on his ... Read More

VHS : The Last Winter
This is a lovely movie, especially for family viewing. It accurately depicts children's life growing up in the Canadian prairies, back in the 1940s when things were much different from today. Director Kim Johnston is actually retelling his own childhood so the attention to accurate detail is excellent. Shot in western rural Manitoba and in Winnipeg, this will touch the soul of the viewer, especially if they have any personal link to that part of the world.

I have loved this film since it was first released in Canada. I saw it at a theatre on Yonge Street in Toronto at a Saturday matinee where the kiss between the two men started a mini-riot sparked by some teen-aged boys in the audience. They were probably expecting a gangster movie !
I have over the years recommended the film, and loaned my VHS and DVD copies to people younger than myself who universally seem to have the same reaction, "It is so Seventies !" Never mind that it is one of the best acted films of its decade, and that it unflinchingly examines complex relationships with an honesty and integrity that would not be equaled for many years. (Possibly until BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.)
Essentially it is the tale of a complex triangle, one part straight, one part gay, where both relationships are going down the tubes simultaneously. ... Read More
