VHS : Geisha Boy
In THE GEISHA BOY, Jerry Lewis provides a performance with equal shades of subtlety and comic brilliance. The colourful backdrop of Japan is a treat to see, and the supporting cast is equally fine.

Small-time magician Gilbert "The Great" Wooley (Jerry Lewis) and his rabbit Harry are part of a USO tour of Japan, but the visit takes an unexpected turn when Harry catches the attention of a shy little orphaned Japanese boy and his concerned aunt. Gilbert is the only one who seems to draw the boy out of his sorrows, and pretty soon a romance has blossomed with Aunt Kimi (Nobu McCarthy), too. But will Gilbert be able to leave everything in order to be with them?

THE GEISHA BOY allowed Jerry Lewis the opportunity to play some dramatic material; his scenes with Robert Hirano ... Read More

VHS : Gunfighter
I'm really surprised this isn't on DVD and more accessible to the public. Gregory Peck is first rate in his role as Ringo, the aging gun-fighter who's taking a hard look at life and wanting to change his ways. And Millard Mitchell was impressive in his supporting role. I loved the foreshadowing all through the picture and I was left stunned by the ending. Wasn't expecting that from a 1950's movie. I'm not a great fan of the western genre (although I'm learning to appreciate it) but this movie is beyond genre; it's a good, solid story with a great leading man.

VHS : The Maltese Falcon
"The Maltese Falcon" is a great movie because of its great actors and tight dialogue. Bogart, as the cynical but ultimately ultramoral, Sam Spade, is great as are his antitheses, Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Mary Astor. Spade is suckered by a beautiful woman [Astor] into what turns out to be the criminal enterprise of locating the 'Maltese Falcon', a ceramic bird worth millions. Men and women fight and die to gain its possession.

The plot is convoluted but convincing and, finally, after the murder of several illicit wealth-seekers, the Falcon is located it and is found to be a phony. The cops lead the beautiful Astor who, while still proclaiming her 'love' for Bogart, off to her well-deserved punishment. Bogart, as Spade, has the opportunity to set her free but...does the 'right' thing and refuses ... Read More

VHS : Hands Across the Table
Hands Across the Table is a fun little film about a gold digging manicurist named Regi (Carole Lombard). She meets a rich man, a cripple who adores her company. Because of his inability to walk, she disregards him as a love interest, but she does spill her problems to him. One of them begins when she meets Theodore Drew III (Fred MacMurray), a formally rich man who lost his fortune in the stock market crash. Now he and Regi are in the same boat, hoping to marry for money. But they have another thing in common; they're falling in love with each other.

Who knew that MacMurray had so much personality, and who would have guessed he'd have so much chemistry with Lombard? The two absolutely sizzle on the screen. Each are hilarious and romantic at the same time, making a film with an average story become outstanding.

VHS : 3 Stooges: Outlaws Is Coming
THE OUTLAWS IS COMING (1965) is yet another great Three Stooges feature film. It's also their last feature. This one has some great comedy in it. I noticed some similarity for THE THREE STOOGES MEET HERCULES (1962), such as the wagon chase at the end. I didn't know they had pies in the old west. Great movie.

Grade: Between A+ and A.

VHS : Saboteur (1942)
Saboteur might be less than prime Hitchcock, but it has its moments; in fact, quite a few of them, in my opinion. Where it falls apart, however, is in an essential part of any movie...the leads, including the villain. Hitchcock usually was able to come up with interesting villains. Just think of James Mason, Robert Walker, Joseph Cotton, the never seen Rebecca, Paul Lukas, Ray Milland, Herbert Marshall or Claude Raines. In his best films, if he didn't have a charismatic villain he had such charismatic leads - Grant, Olivier, Donat, Bergman, Stewart, for example, that it didn't make much difference

With Saboteur, we have as the male lead Robert Cummings, a pleasant actor, a fine light comedian but, in drama, just earnest, bland and conscientious. His partner here is Priscilla Lane, long forgotten but reasonably popular back then. She's a nice ... Read More
