I was serving in the Marine Corps when this first came out. Many of us used to kick back and jeer at the discrepancies in it. Such as, The bulk of the story takes place at Camp Lejuene N.C. and it was filmed at Camp Pendleton Ca. The terrain at the two bases is radically different. Eastwood's platoon of recon marines is depicted as a ragtag crew of slackers. Marine force reconaissance is an elite ,all volunteer force in league with Army rangers and Navy SEALS. It's doubtful that such an unruly recon platoon has ever existed. On the training exercise when Gunny Highways no nonsense CO challenges him to hand to a hand to fight at the pit, it's another one. Any commissioned officer that would pull a stunt like that, especially in front of the men, would be in front of his own superiors desk in a snap. ... Read More

I was the location manager on this project. The big ranch house is the same one used in McLintock. Located about 80 miles from Tucson in the San Rafael Valley, the owner at the time was a very nervous lady called Mrs. Sharp. I remember the first time I took Blake Edwards and his entourage there (which included his wife, Julie Andrews)to see if it could work for the film and get permission from Mrs. Sharp. She and I had been good friends for awhile since I had used her place before in films. During the meeting, she ask me to go to the kitchen with her. We sat at her table and had coffee, while all these important people sat patiently in her living room. She finally said, "I don't like these people". I almost panicked. Then I got an idea. I took her to the door and asked her peek through the little window ... Read More

Haha. That's just a joke. There is only part 6. That was supposed to be a joke too. Now you don't know about this movie because there was actually a cover-up initiated by The Cos himself because he was so embarrassed about it!

After you sit through the painful, hand drawn credit-sequence you get to watch the only part of the film worth watching! This is extremely handy because you now no longer have to watch the rest of the movie. They were nice enough to put the funniest parts of the film, spliced together at the beginning of the film for us! In a split second we see: a tank car soaring through the air, Cos in a spacesuit dancing ballet w/ pink ballet slippers, and Cos in a janitor's uniform riding an ostrich through a roaring ball o' fire!!! By the time this sequence is over you will be rolling on the floor ... Read More

Now this movie is one baad muther-shut-your mouth! I thought this was an excellent movie that tried to portray the life of a private detective in the Harlem of the early 70's in a gritty and hence more realistic manner. As a result, this movie is certainly dated and unmistakenably of that time and place as witnessed by the lingo and slang used liberally throughout and yet I found it still very enjoyable to watch even today.

This cat Shaft reminded me a lot of Humphrey Bogart's character in the "Maltese Falcon" which I also thoroughly enjoyed but one thing that this movie has which is lacking in that great film noir classic is an excellent score. Rarely has a film been identified or even been associated so much with a score that one can't think of one without the other. Sure there have been great scores that ... Read More

When I was younger, this used to be shown on TV a fair bit but now it's all but forgotten. The story is slim but quite well done, and it involves a group of eight people who meet up on a flight destined for a mystery holiday destination. The two leads are Cloris Leachman and Lloyd Bridges, as Ellen and Dave, two unnacompanied travellers who make friends and soon become close. Like most of those aboard, they have taken the flight in response to a mysterious brochure, but not all of the characters are holidaymakers. Two of them are honeymooners, one (a priest) is travelling to the area to make a pilgrimage into the surrounding jungle areas to meet a lost tribe, while yet another has simply been booked onto the wrong flight by mistake.

The group all seem pretty delighted when they arrive at at very luxurious hotel in ... Read More

Talented people made this movie, but the result was disappointing. Quinn Martin, who produced some outstanding crime dramas, tried his hand here at a Western. Unfortunately and uncharacteristically, Martin was unable to put together a solid crime story, strong characters, and a colorful backdrop. The movie's dabbling in sentimental, moralizing subplots, which have never been Martin's strength, only made matters worse.

The movie does not get high marks for creating a sense of place. It was tied down to a standard few sets and street shots, depicting an old southwestern town in a competent but not particularly noteworthy way. The mud in the streets sticks in the mind more than anything else.

The story was plodding and uncomfortably overlong for the minimal payoff. It failed to create interesting supporting ... Read More
