A great genre film is not necessarily a great piece of cinema, for the dictates of genre often run counter to the dictates of art; namely that genre demands familiar elements (aka clichés). As good an example of this dictum that can be found is director Howard Hawks' 1948 (although filmed in 1946) black and white western Red River. There is great debate amongst western aficionados as to who was the greater director of westerns, John Ford or Howard Hawks? Well, if one compares the two westerns most consider the two directors' apexes in the genre, Ford's The Searchers and this film, it's no contest. Red River and Hawks win in a walk. That's because Hawks was basically concerned with narrative and characters while Ford obsessed over myth making and caricatures. Even Ford tacitly admitted Hawks ... Read More

VHS : From Here to Eternity
From Here to Eternity is more than the classic scene of Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster rolling around on a beach, covered in ocean waves. It's a story about America during World War II. It's about human beings trying to live normal lives during an abnormal time. Taking place just before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, this is more than a war movie. It's a human story of love, honor, humor, and hope. Anyone who enjoys real-life drama will appreciate this well-written and well-acted story. From Here to Eternity (Superbit Collection)

VHS : The Heiress
The Heiress (1949) is an outstanding movie - adaptation of the play by Augustus and Ruth Goetz, based on the novel "Washington Square" by great writer, Henry James, The drama of a young, shy, sweet, open to love, rather plain in her appearance but very rich girl takes place in New York City in the mid-1880s. Olivia de Havilland is excellent as Catherine, the heiress of the title, who fells in love with a very good looking young man Morris Townsend(Montgomery Clift in the role that had propelled him to the stardom), who may or may not be after her extraordinary wealth. Catherine's Father, Dr. Austin Sloper (Ralf Richardson) is protective of his daughter and does not trust Moris sincerely felling in love with awkward Catherine. I was very happy to receive my VHS movie of Montgomery Clift. It was in excellent condition, sealed as promised, and so far has worked perfectly on my VCR. It took a few weeks to arrive, but it was reasonably priced, so it was worth waiting for. Thank you!

VHS : A Place in the Sun
Charlie Chaplin called George Steven's 1951 A Place In the Sun the greatest American movie he had ever seen. The passing of fifty seven years has dulled this comment somewhat but it is still an amazing film experience. The film based loosely on Theodore Dreiser's American Tragedy transports Dreiser's story to 1950's America and confronts the problems faced by returning veterans as they try to move up in a stratified society.

There are great performances by Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelly Winters as the principals caught in a love triangle that eventually leads to murder. The film is less an indictment against American capitalism than it is a love story and on the whole the editing that Steven's two screen writers (Michael Wilson and Harry Brown) did to the source material greatly improves the flow of the story. The ... Read More

VHS : I Confess
The performances of the primary actors are excellent, including that of Karl Malden as a tenacious detect, Montgomery Clift as the unusually innocent priest, and especially that of Anne Baxter as the woman who stays in love with a man after he has become a priest.

The direction by Alfred Hitchcock was diabolically good. You might even say, blasphemously exquisite. Let me explain.

On the surface, this film seems to be about how firm a priest could be in his faith. Because of his priestly vows, Father Logan refuses to implicate a killer, merely because the killer has confessed to him. The killer has the sanctuary of the priest's vows.

I have no doubt that many viewers of this film, especially the faithful, would walk away from the cinema in admiration of Father Logan's adherence to his vows.

However, ... Read More

VHS : Young Lions
Based on a novel by Irving Shaw, The Young Lions is a rare WWII movie in that it tries to tell the story of both sides, German and American, through three separate characters. Christian Diestl is a young lieutenant in the German army, an idealistic German and not a Nazi, who begins to question his beliefs has the war takes a turn for the worse and he sees what war brings out in people. Noah Ackerman is a loner who meets a young woman and falls in love, marrying her days before heading off to boot camp. Ackerman must deal with the anti-Semetic prejudices of many people around him when all he wants to do is prove himself. Mike Whiteacre is a Broadway singer and an admitted coward who is fed up with being drafted. With a run time of just under three hours, the characters are given a chance to develop and grow in a believable way as the war begins in the late ... Read More

This version was part of a PBS series and features the Dame
herself. She even uses a four letter word (not the "F" one)
and comes across well. She is our last true star and this
is a fine tribute to her.
