This is a wonderful movie, and I'm surprised that it hasn't been put on DVD seeing as it has three great stars - Loretta Young, William Holden, and Robert Mitchum. A good story of unfolding love and devotion in pioneer times. PLEASE PUT THIS ON DVD!

This movie is the late 1980's adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic and has everything you could ever want in a Christmas movie, laughs, inspiration, nostalgia, this movie has it all!

Frank Cross is the youngest Network President in the history of television and seemingly has everything he could ever want, however, he has lost the kindness and cheer of giving and the meaning of Christmas. Three ghosts are sent to straighten him out and teach him the true meaning of Christmas. The movie features an all-star cast: Robert Mitchem, Karen Allen, Bill Murray, Brian Doyle Murray, John Forsythe, Bobcat Goldthwaite, David Johansen, Alfre Woodard and they don't disappoint. This is a great addition to any Christmas DVD collection!

I give it 5 Stoli and Tabs! (it's what Frank Cross ... Read More

VHS : Night of the Hunter (1955)
As you watch this film, the irrational, troubling feeling that you know it... that the horror you mother tried to soothe away with a sip of sugar water saying, hush, it was only a dream... which you've always tried to forget, had been lurking here all the time, waiting for the unguarded moment to get you....

The Night of the Hunter awakes a primal sense of evil and fear as no other film I know. Robert Mitchum embodies evil which is profound and petty, vicious and maudlin, prescient and idiotic, and always, always relentlessly bearing down on what we fear most..

This is sustained, inspired filmmaking of the highest order. Action and character unfold together, seamlessly. There is not one scene superfluous to the film as a whole, nothing you could or would do without.. And the ... Read More

I saw this film in the theatre back in '93 or so, and walked out of the darkness thinking that Judd had a great career ahead of her. Now over ten years later, it seems that R-in-P is destined to be her best film ever. I'd buy this movie in a heartbeat were it available on DVD. What's the problem? No distributor?

VHS : Thirty Seconds over Tokyo
It seems relevant and important to say something about my favorite World War II film -- "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" -- on Veteran's Day. While I did not serve in the military, my dad fought in WW2 in the Pacific at Tarawa, one of the Marines' most heralded battles in history. Dad told me 6,000 men were killed in the four-day shootout for Tarawa, a little island in the Pacific we wanted for an air strip. Five thousand of those deaths, he told me, were Japanese. We buried the Americans in grave and dug trenches for the enemy dead, he said.

None of this says anything about this great film, which relates a time much earlier in the war and reconstructs our first mainland attack on Japan. What makes this film great is its authenticity, being filmed while the war was taking place, and its importance as ... Read More

VHS : Holiday Affair (1949)
Holiday Affair is a gem -- hardly ever broadcast on television, though for the life of me I don't know why not.
It's sweet without being saccharine and a terrific old black-and-white film to watch with popcorn and your C7 Christmas-lit tree in the background...

Mitchum(Baby,I don't care) seems to be having the most fun in playing the part of the drunken sheriff; his performance seemed most convincing.( Overall Dvd quality is good and with fine opening credits.)If they played this for farce, they may have gotten away with it. 2 Spitoons...just for Bob. (This was a big hit when it opened way back when so I guess they DID get away with it)Your move.

VHS : Farewell My Lovely
Robert Mitchum, Sylvia Miles, Charlotte Rampling, Harry Dean Stanton, Jack O'Halloran, John Ireland and Sylvester Stallone, among others - what a lineup. Of the entire genre of film noir, tough guy detective films, this one is by far the best. Mitchum is at his all time best, even though he's nearly sixty in this film (a bit old to play Marlowe, in my opinion, but he carries it off with absolute aplomb). He is the quintessential tough guy gumshoe Marlowe (he floors Dick Powell's previous characterization of the role), Sylvia Miles and Charlotte Rampling turn in flawless performances, and in fact Sylvia Miles received a well-deserved Oscar nod for hers. John Ireland and Harry Dean Stanton also gave marquee performances as well. Even young Sylvester Stallone is a surprise. But another one that stands out for ... Read More
