This film touched my life - I hope it does the same for you.

Quite simply, it's amazing.

This movie is poor in every dimension. The most egregious of its inadequacies is the director's inability to tell such a simple story. Any scene of impending interest is killed; leaving the feeling that the director is trying to create a movie out of loosely related short vignettes, thus deliberately downplaying anything that could be mistaken for a plot. The only reason I finished this movie was because I could not believe how bad it was. I have turned off many a "better" movie. This could be ranked as one of the ten worst directed movies in history. Unfortunately, you can not rank something as zero stars on Amazon.

VHS : Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000
The political notions in this film are embarassing and so completely tied to a particular naive era. I was very much a part of it and have rejected it.

What will really last about this film for me is that I saw it on a date. Our love affair blossomed and was based on the same foolish notions, intellectual climate and naive beliefs saturating the film. Our child should have been 20 in the year 2000. Is was not. Like the notions motivating the film, the dreams of the love affair paralleled the dreamy vacuousness of the values of the characters in the film. Nothing survives. No Jonah. No dream. No reality. No touch. Just the embarassment of having lived hard and hopefully in the 1970s and crashing on the actual nature of real humans under real stress. It was all thought-dream fantasies ... Read More

VHS : The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob
This will likely be the funniest and one of the most charming movies you will see in your life. It has humor only the French can conceive of. The main actor (forget his name) provides endless funny gesturing, verbal wordplay,--it is simply a great great movie. I only wish more people were aware of it. Absolutely don't miss it. Worth every penny.

This is truly a wonderful film if you wish to get a sense for class conflict in nineteenth-century Europe. I regularly show the film to my European history classes and believe it is high time that a DVD version be released.

VHS : My Other Husband
George Lautner's French film "My Other Husband" (original title "Attention, une femme peut en cacher une autre") hits a comedic bull's eye. This French style charming comedy depicts a spirited nurse (a surgeon's assistant in Paris, nicely played by Miou-Miou) who leads two lives. One is with her significant other in the countryside of Normandy, and the other is with her estranged husband in Paris. In Paris, the nurse, surgeon, husband and child all lead the life of sophisticates. Alice, the nurse, has been traveling to Normandy, where for four days every week she works at a salt water cure, and shares her life with Vincent, a teacher, and his two children. After a decade of separation, she is by chance reunited in Paris with her husband, Philippe, and her 10 year old son, Simon. She then carries on a double life since ... Read More

A perfect final film from Louis Malle. Shades of Renoir & Bergman, this is in its structure an almost a classic farce but it also contains a steak of absurdist Bunuelian irony (Carrière was the scriptwriter of some of Bunuel's best films). Best of all are the wonderful performances so beautifully orchestrated by the most human of directors.

Why no DVD???

10.Menage starring: Gérard Depardieu, Michel Blanc, Miou-Miou, Michel Creton, Jean-François Stévenin

The original title of this film is "Tenue de soiree". A very ironic title if you consider the story : two [unsuccessful folks] meet smart guy (Gerard Depardieu) with money and connections. Only problem : the money has dubious origins and the connections are a little too connected to the crime world. Let's not even talk about the sexual depravity of Mr. Smart who offers his new friends the brilliant career of prostitution.
The film is a must not only because of the weird and hilarious story but also for the great lines (a condition of success in French theaters). Who will forget the famous comment : "When I see your gloomy face, I feel like ordering a coffin " ?
This film has become a classic in France. It displays the same black humor as "Le pere Noel est une ordure" (you don't want me to translate this and you don't ... Read More
