VHS : Tarzan (Walt Disney)
Somewhere in 2000, Disney quietly launched a special 2 disc collector's edition of "Tarzan" the same year as its paltry one disc edition. For some reason it advertised the one disc version heavily, which is a shame because the collector's edition is a gem not to be missed by fans. Unfortunately I didn't know about it until years after its release, and by then it was out of print, hard to find, and expensive. Luckily I found a copy that was decently priced, and was finally able to get my hands on this remarkable edition. I see this as the "Tarzan" DVD for adults: instead of cartoony illustrations on the jacket, there's Glen Keane's famous sketch of Tarzan peering at you with those intense eyes. The menus are extremely well designed and the commentaries are entertaining and insightful. It's ... Read More

Gerard Butler's singing made me cringe. Actually, he didn't sing as much as shout in a role that demands an excellent tenor. It killed a movie for me that otherwise was very good. You can do Professor Harold Hill with a non-singer but not the Phantom. Patrick Wilson did a fine job as Raoul. Emma Rossum had youth and innocence applicable to the role, and her singing is passable but immature, not surprising given that she was 18 when she made it. That Webber picked her personally shocks me since there are better singers. Throughout the movie I longed to hear Sarah Brightman but not as much as I wanted to hear Michael Crawford.

Character development at it's best. Written and on the screen. It draws audiences to see it and big name talent to be in it.

This movie does have a refreshing philosophical perspective, but it's not executed well. A lot of the dialogue is plodding or obvious. The characters have no chemistry, relationship twists seem surreal, and the waste and extravagance is enormous for so called "enlightened" souls.
The movie is too long and repetitive and ultimately predictable.

I know that this is quite different from the original story, but it's still a good movie. It's Hollywood-ized, but it's not so Hollywood-ized that it just flings Benny back into Jack's arms as if nothing happened.

I hadn't watched this and years and popped the DVD in to see if I wanted to keep it or resell it. I think I'll keep it. I'd forgotten how good a movie it is. It's such a relief these days to see a film with so many reasonable, believable characters when so many movies now seem to sell themselves on outlandishness.

It was HUGELY refreshing to see a girl who really is big--tall and solid--playing a character that's supposed to be big. She is not at all unattractive and is not portrayed as plain, awkward, or "nerdy" (as un-beauties usually are). She's just ... Read More

I really enjoyed this weird movie. It really taught me about the dark side of gambling. The main character gambled, but had no idea why, or what he was trying to get out of his gambling.

Don't gamble without a money target and when you hit your target, cash out. Also have a stop loss on you gambling losses.

Great movie. relates very well to trading and day-trading.

VHS : Ideal Husband (1999)
Everybody likes Oscar Wilde. Some even feel sorry for him. But he doesn't need our pity: we need his wise and witty insight.

Oliver Parker really likes Oscar Wilde. He's done An Ideal Husband in 1999 (director, screenplay, and plays a character called Bunbury); The Importance of Being Ernest in 2002, (director and screenplay); and is working on his version of Dorian Gray which will be released in 2009. This is a look at the 1999 film.

It's probable that the big screen treatment and some well known actors will bring an audience to Wilde's plays that would never attend a theatre performance of them, let alone read them (the texts are available as a free download at www.manybooks.com). But a cinematic treatment must in some sense be an adaptation, not merely a performance, so something ... Read More

VHS : Grosse Pointe Blank
Grosse Pointe Blank, a dark comedy made in 1997, features John Cusack in yet another charming role. A professional killer returns home for a job, tries to rekindle a love affair he ran out on, and attends his high school reunion.

One of my favorite things about watching older (older as in not at the theater recently) movies is scanning the crowd for now well known actors. Minnie Driver, Joan Cusack, Alan Arkin and Dan Aykroyd all have co-starring roles in this, but there are others there too. Hank Azaria, Jenna Elfman, Jeremy Piven, along with Bill & Ann Cusack. (Did you know there were more Cusacks?)

The movie features a fantastic, hilarious, death by pen scene and Joan Cusack in one of her lovely quirky roles. The scenes with John Cusack and Dan Aykroyd are among the best as they play ... Read More
