I was hesitant to go for the two disk set, but it's really worth it if you love musicals, and love MGM movies. The second disk is a great addition, packed with loads of info about Arthur Freed, with commentary by Debbie Reynolds, and it even includes the original film clips of the songs in the movie. This is a great choice for a fan.

VHS : Gunfighter
I'm really surprised this isn't on DVD and more accessible to the public. Gregory Peck is first rate in his role as Ringo, the aging gun-fighter who's taking a hard look at life and wanting to change his ways. And Millard Mitchell was impressive in his supporting role. I loved the foreshadowing all through the picture and I was left stunned by the ending. Wasn't expecting that from a 1950's movie. I'm not a great fan of the western genre (although I'm learning to appreciate it) but this movie is beyond genre; it's a good, solid story with a great leading man.

VHS : Double Life, A
A few things came to my mind while viewing "A Double Life". Foremost the film's theme of actors unable to separate roles from reality foreshadowed the recent passing of Heath Ledger. The liner notes state that Cary Grant turned the role of Anthony John before Ronald Colman accepted it. No offence to Grant, but I think it a wise decision because I can't see him doing a better job than Colman. Essentially this a high-brow psychological horror film. If you like this film it would behoove you to check out the films producer Val Lewton made for RKO or "The Lodger" and "Hangover Square" from Fox. All around this is a first rate production. One has to start with Colman who gives a performance for the ages. His character is sympathetic despite the monstrous impulses that lurk beneath his surface. The script by Garson ... Read More

VHS : Naked Spur
In all fairness to "The Naked Spur" I watched this movie because it was listed in the book "501 Must-See Movies". OK, that must make it a really good film. Well, I kept waiting for it to get to that level and it never did. I can see some reasons why the movie has its' admirers; it delves into greed with a fair amount of depth, Jimmie Stewart gives a pretty good preformance, the setting/cinematography is outstanding, there is a continuing level of suspense, etc. However, I thought the movie moved along in a rather erratic pace. There were aspects that I had trouble accepting (a rather peculiar fault of mine that I realize most people don't suffer from). One particular aspect was how one of the characters was wounded to near the point of death. As the movie progressed, it was necessary to overlook his injuries although ... Read More
