VHS : Turning Point
I am very surprised that this movie had this high ratings. I may agree with others on the right casting, but this was not my genre. I mean, I love watching ballet but I hated to see ballet connected with divorce, alcohol, sexual relationships before marriage, jealous, mean words and actions, and swearing words. It was a very ugly movie with a beautiful ballet. The dance was exquisite but I didn't enjoy it at all because I didn't like the characters at all. When my daughter covered her ears, I had to turn it off. The peace came back as soon as it was shut off. I picked this movie because it was on the government's pick list, but I don't think my Heavenly Father wants me to watch this again.

VHS : Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker (American Ballet Theatre)
Perhaps the best interpretation of "The Nutcracker" ever made. Baryshnikov's finest hour. And as even the most ballet-ignorant know, that bar's set pretty high.

I have seen Mikhail Baryshnikov dance in the much-praised chick-flick "The Turning Point." And I have seen him dance his own interpretation of "Don Quixote." Good. Great, even. But not as much as fellow Russkie ballerino Nureyev's stab at "Quixote." And I have seen much more of him dancing. The man defies gravity, as well as many other laws. A ballet dancer, in the country of America, has been treated like a movie star. But this may very well be his best work, artistic-wise.

Mikhail Baryshnikov is man who hardly needs an introduction, as he is a man who is synonymous with ballet. The man is a household name, ... Read More

VHS : Dancers
Dancers is enjoyable to watch. The plot is hokey, at the very least, but it has to tie the dancing in somehow. The dance scenes are beautiful all around and when those sequences cut to the movie's plot it is dissapointing but it makes you look forward to enjoying the next dance scene.

Yes, I admit, you may be tempted to fast forward but it's not nearly as painful as The Turning Point where the dancing scenes were sparse. (Or Center Stage which was a complete waste) In this movie there are plenty of beautiful dance scenes that overall make it worthwhile. Looking forward to DVD. Overall, it is enjoyable if you love Baryshnikov and the ballet Giselle. One of the better dance movies.

This movie has the best dancers ever! A dancer tries to leave the USSR after a plane crash but they want to force him to stay to dance in the country. His roomates want to leave with him after they find out the wife is pregnant. Excellent movie I used to watch this movie over and over again as a child and now that I have it on DVD I'm sure I will again!

VHS : Baryshnikov: The Dancer and the Dance
Baryshnikov at his brilliant best. Covering his introduction to the world of ballet in The Soviet Union, until his time with The New York Ballet Co. Wonderfully presented by Shirley MacLaine who seems to put Baryshnikov very much at ease in the interviews.
The Video finishes with the very complicated and intriguing ballet. Truly amazing dancing by the whole company.
Filmed in 1983 with very good visual and audio quality.

VHS : Adam: Giselle
This version of Giselle is the benchmark to judge all Giselles. What sets this Giselle apart from all the others are the extensions that both Baryshnikov & Makarova put into their technical performances. Martine van Hamel, well, I'm in love with her, and her performance is simply the best Myrtha I have ever witnessed, expressing the correct demeanour matched only by her phenomenal technical performance considering that she is not exactly a petite ballerina--that is what makes her performance extraordinarily amazing! It is for the performance of Myrtha by Hamel that I am drawn time and again to this Giselle excluding, of course, the famous variation of Giselle in the second act that only Makarova has done to perfection. However, Hamel puts on such a consistently well executed performance of extrenuous movements ... Read More
