VHS : Die Watching
This thriller by director Charles Davis is notable more for what it doesn't show, rather than for what it does. There is often a cinematic sadism in the demonstration of the work of a serial killer, which blurs the line between drama and exploitation, in a similar way that cinematic sexual activity can be viewed as integral or gratuitous. One could accuse Davis of sexual exploitation of the women victims of the serial killer here, since he films them performing a striptease and it appears to be the sight of their exposed breasts that sets off the homicide, but the actual killings are not graphic. This may ironically frustrate those who yearn to see thrillers with violent acts, but it says something positive, in my view at least, about Davis skill as a filmmaker. The plot uses the idea of Peeping ... Read More

VHS : Victor Victoria
For anyone who thinks that Julie Andrews is nothing more than a mere song and dance routine, or the voice behind that infectiously annoying `hills are alive' song I have only one thing to say to you; watch `Victor/Victoria'. I happened to stumble onto this film last night and I have thought of nothing else since. Sure, it has yet to be 24 hours but honestly, it is the ONLY thing that I have thought of since the credits began to roll. As a whole the film is adorable, but its strongest part is none other than Julie Andrews. Her astonishing performance is quite probably her finest moment (although I am very partial to `Marry Poppins') and she chews up each and every scene with her charm and grace.

Victoria Grant is a down-on-her-luck soprano singer willing to `sell her virtue for a ... Read More

I rented this movie almost 10 years ago and have actually taken the time to look it up on Amazon solely so I could slag it for being the worst movie I ever saw. While trying to ride the coattails of "Friday," the producers of this movie have given us a grossly juvenile "film" that probably set black film making back 10 years. Some awful stereotypes and much, much more offensively lame, lame, lame, lame humor ensues. This movie was so painfully unfunny that it actually was depressing. Long conversations followed on just how awful it was. Truly, this movie is just too awful to waste more words on, but please distance yourself from this stinker. DO NOT BUY!!!
