VHS : Good Neighbor Sam
What a great "old" movie! Not the quality we're used to today, but the storyline was wonderfully funny. The seller sent this movie extremely FAST as they stated they would, and the condition of this movie was as described. (It was a used VHS version). I was very pleased with my purchase and shipping experience.

VHS : Soylent Green
We all know by now about climate change and waste heat in cities, but Soylent Green was the first to show it. The alarm about population growth had been sounded by Dr. Paul Ehrlich, and during the eco-conscious seventies, people were taking it seriously. Several films (and many books) featured overpopulation themes, but few did it better than SG. The gap between rich and poor also seems more prescient now, with the rich living in fortresses and the poor scrambling as best they can. Given those conditions, it is not surprising that New York looks like Calcutta, or that the local constabulary is corrupt as a matter of course. The film barrels along with Charlton Heston playing his other stalwart (the Hero-Heel) and Edward G. Robinson stealing every scene he's in. The McGuffin is the murder of Joseph ... Read More

VHS : Harlow (1965)
Jean Harlow was an A picture star for MGM who filmed with Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and William Powell. No mention of them in the film. Here, she's just a bitchy B picture star for Majestic Studios, holding her professional virginity from a B cowboy star played by Mike Connors and making her queer husband Paul Berns (Peter Lawford) impotent. The real Jean Harlow had more dignity in her pinky finger than the character Carroll Baker portrays with her usual display of hysterics granted by a trashy script.

VHS : Good Neighbor Sam
GOOD NEIGHBOR Sam is a strangely neglected American sex comedy of the 1960s, with Jack Lemmon, an actor I otherwise can do without, but here he strikes me as an accomplished farceur with more bite to him than most male stars of his day. He has attitude; he might have appeared in ZOOLANDER with that edge. Here he was a fairly good part as a sculptor who works during the day way down the ladder at a San Francisco ad agency--it's a very MAD MEN office, but more authentic in some ways, and the scenes of the admen exchanging dispirited glances at their busty, uninterested secretarial staff has the MAD MEN motif down pat. I suppose casting Lemmon in this part must have been a calculated move on the parts of the producers to recall his work in Billy Wilder's famous film of THE APARTMENT, but kick me out of cineaste heaven, for I have to say I prefer ... Alright, there are no special features. Alright, so there aren't even any subtitles. And there are a couple of seconds where the picture had grain- ok, I give. But overall, this film is excellently presented. I don't have any complaints about the sound or the picture- in fact, I thought it was remarkably clear considering that it hasn't been preserved as well as a lot of other pictures. Trust me, the plot more than makes up for any minor annoyances.

In an Oscar nominated performance, Joan Crawford plays successful playwright Myra Hudson. When she falls in love with a handsome actor named Lester (played by Jack Palance, nominated for Best Supporting Actor) everything seems perfect. But when she discovers her husband's plot to murder her, she designs a plan to reverse the gun.

This movie is great, and if you're not one of ... Read More
