I enjoyed watching ran. it was quite different than most American films in a lot of ways. it had an unique combination of humor and drama. I particularly liked the large battle scenes. i think a lot of the epic battle scenes in movies that i like now were heavily influenced by this film. this film has an interesting mix of both American and foreign film styles. The influence of Japanese Noh theater is clearly strong. While some American audiences might be put off by some aspects of the film, i still think it reaches a wide, diverse audience nonetheless.

Yeeees, dude, it was better than I thought it'd be and all anima isn't "cartoon level" so there, I admitted it in a public place. ;-) Besides, you knew I didn't really think these types of films truly had no value, I was joking. Don't you remember I said Princess Mononoke was "mostly OK"?

Um, hi, everybody. Uh, yeah, this Teito Monogatari is a good movie and I think it's worth the money. Time travel, spiritualism, earthquakes, anti-westernism versus pro-traditionalism, widescale monster-based destruction, yup, it's got it all. Go, Toei Studios!

Ahem.

It always amazes me that folks always wax poetic about Akira Kurosawa and never seem to get past the director to get to the story.

Now I have to admit that I'm really into Japanese cinema, but this is a very artsy movie. If you are looking for Yojimbo, bypass this. This is not that kind of movie. This is the kind of movie that someone with a liberal arts degree who enjoys visiting art museums might enjoy. It is a bunch of increasing dark vignettes with a happy one at the end.

The first involves a 10 year old boy who sees a marriage procession who then is kicked out by mother and given a tanto (knife) and told that he has to kill himself. Beautiful scenery as he heads into the field to beg for his life. We don't (thankfully) see the outcome. This was one of the happier ... Read More

VHS : Village of Dreams
Village of Dreams is about two identical artists who work on children's books and now they share their childhood times as young boys, 8 or 9. The twins live primarily with their mother while their father is away on business. An old man claims to have adopted the family also. The mother is a schoolteacher who openly favors her own two children in the classroom and is reprimanded and criticized for doing so.

If you are not familiar with foreign film, or watch it infrequently, you may find this film very slow, especially since it runs two hours. I was not moved by the young boys, and it seem to be just sequence after sequence of incidences. We see them trapping eel quite often, into mischief, breaking bulbs, tearing down taro plants, and playful times with each other. There are incidences in school ... Read More
