VHS : Alberto Express
The basic premise for this wonderful comedy is the strange customary tradition between father and son, Alberto, wherein the son has to pay the father a designated amount of money for his "debt" to him (the debt of a child to a parent). Nino Manfredi is wonderful as the father. Most of the movie takes place on a train, the Paris to Rome Express, which Alberto rides home to return to his pregnant wife. This is where the fun begins. All the characters on the train seem geared toward helping or preventing Alberto from his goal of raising the money to pay his father. He tries stealing their valuables, but loses the whole bundle of loot in a crazy adventure on the top of the train. There are some wacky and wonderful scenes with various characters; like the guy who lets Alfredo steal all ... Read More

VHS : The Count of Monte Cristo Box Set (Miniseries)
One of the few memories I have of my father is that he raved about The Count of Monte Cristo as being among his favorite novels.

During my American 'education' - in front of the TV screen - I have of course come across the recent version with James Caviezel, and I thought it a nice movie but, as I have come to perceive most films, it was nothing really spectacular.

I have begun listening to audio books, which I can rent a great number of for free from the public library, and per chance I have come across an unabridged version of this novel. It is a narration by Fred Williams spanning 40 CDs.

No literary or visionary escapade I have yet witnessed compares with the sublime splendor of the masterpiece which I have, quite by accident, discovered - that is ... Read More

VHS : Beaumarchais the Scoundrel
I can't comment on the historical accuracy, but from what I do know of Beaumarchais I would say they succeeded with flying colours in representing his character, aswell as the atmosphere of the time. While the film is light-hearted and very funny, it doesn't take the easy option of caracaturising him as a cheeky libertine but also explores his serious ideals, which are essential to understanding the plays (and operas). And then of course there's the added bonus of the incredible Fabrice Lucchini who is equally at home creating the twinkle-eyed scoundrel, the passionate idealist, and the ordinary man who nervously awaits the verdicts of censors and public. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

VHS : The Game Is Over
If you look at this movie, you will see the amazing and very clear projection of what happens when in a relationship one partner views the other as a "thing", a "posession", an "object" rather than providing care and love. We can learn from this movie decades later in that in relationships we all need a real connection, an internal love that in which the two characters found (Renee and Maxime). They connected, since they were both viewed as "objects" by the one who controlled them and viewed them this way. Both attempted to escape the control they were under and in doing so wound up being blackmailed by the controller. What a great movie to show how power and control and the fear of losing it, will stop at nothing to destroy anothers kindred spirit. Although the ending was not a typical "happily ever after" ... This was a really funny movie. I usually don't like reading sub-titles, but I hardly even noticed them because the movie was so good. The humor is understated and well-done. I highly recommend this movie.
