I hope the excellence of this production will mean it becomes more widely available. Yes, it's black and white. No matter: it never stops one from watching film noir; why should it matter when one has such a wonderful example of another genre! The cast is uniformly good - and sometimes very much better than good - though Jason is a bit pedestrian. Fortunately we see little of him. But Judith Anderson - what to say about Judith Anderson? Her characterization is superb. She inhabits such a mythic and archetypal plane that every gesture, stance and cadence re-defines reality - and everyone else seems small and shadowy by comparison, part of some other world sketchily realized. Others seem to say their lines compellingly - until she speaks; and then everyone else seems to be speaking ... Read More

VHS : The Unanswered Question - Six Talks at Harvard by Leonard Bernstein
Bernstein was not only one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, and not only one of its best composers, but also one of its greatest teachers. Who better, then, to deliver lectures on music? Let's face it, few, if any of us, will ever have teachers as brilliant as this instructing us in real life. This set is required viewing for all people who want to learn how to teach, and, in fact, that is probably the greatest value of this set, apart from its musical insights. Watch this DVD series over and over, and you will learn how to teach from a master musician and instructional designer who spins out, over 6 DVDs, some of the most tightly constructed and brilliantly illustrated lessons ever created. If ever there was to be a Hall of Fame for Instructional Design, this set ought to be nominated ... Read More

Movie is long but it sure does give you a view of how poorly people were treated. It was great to see how their belief kept them strong

VHS : Jane Austen in Manhattan
I'm a Jane Austen freak and devoted to Merchant Ivory movies. This one is early and quirky. It's about art and acting. It's about two quite different ways to bring Jane Austen to life in Manhattan: a traditional, aristocratic way, and an avant garde liberatory way. Watching the two ways interact on the screen (and almost merge at the end) while trying to follow the story of who abducted who and how she felt about it ties your mind in unexpected knots. I think one needs to have read not only Jane Austen's juvenilia, but also Richardson's now-impossible once-best-seller novel Sir Charles Grandison to understand all the allusions and satire. If you happen to have experienced the artistic circles in New York in the 60's and 70's - from the upper class patrons of experimental avant garde art to the struggling young would ... Read More

VHS : The Wind Cannot Read
The movie seems to be forgotten all over the place and released in 1958. The movie is a love story between a RAF officer ( Dirk Bogarde ,good guys) and a beautiful japanese girl ( huba huba, Yoko Tani) set in india during world war 2. The movie has many memorable moments and is great for romantics. I like the movie alot. I get annoyed when people spell out the plot in there reviews. Its a simple plot but good. It's best to just watch the movie and get surpised by it to get the full emotional relishment out of it. A very watchable movie. I've watched it a few times.

VHS : Above Us the Waves
This movie is based on true events which took place in the UK and Norway during the Second World War.The German battleship Tirpitz was wreaking havoc on British shippimg in the North Sea.It was anchored in a remote and inaccessible Norwegian fjord and was impervious to attacks from the air or from the sea using conventional surface vessels or ordinary submarines. The British Admiralty devised a plan to destroy the ship by using manned ,midget submarines to inflitrate the anchorage and destroy the ship

The movie takes us through the various stages of the expedition starting with its conception and the training for the mission ,followed by its execution and ending with the aftermath .In this respect it bears more kinship to a caper movie than to a blood and guts war movie .We are not given slam bang action here but sit back and ...
