Kill Bill - Volume One
This is my first Quentine Tarantino film. Editing is ultimate. Wow! What Music! Uma Thurman gives a terrific performance. I knever knew Michael Madsen or Carradine at that time. Both actors were my Dad's-time-guys. But after seeing Kill Bill, I have pin-ups of Madsen in my room. Paps always used to speak of 'Reservoir Dogs', 'Jackie Brown' etc..but they were not 'my-period' films. Even Daryl Hannah! I knew her only as the 'mermaid' from 'Splash'. I saw KILL BILL on the BIG SCREEN and became hooked. Now I do not miss a single film by Tarantino.

This is one of the very best modern movies. Though it is a good deal more serious, it is certainly on par with such movies as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Punch-Drunk Love. The one problem I have is that IT HASN'T BEEN RELEASED ON DVD YET. How the suits could pass over such a stupendous work of art is beyond me, though not surprising. This movie will help you understand a certain illness better than you ever have (or even possibly ever could), and it will break your heart with its frank portrayal of a doomed and short-lived love affair. A movie you couldn't possibly forget, this will make your life deeper. Now we just NEED IT ON DVD!

I grew up with horror, and a lot of why I liked it was the sex and violence. This one features some of the best girl on girl scenes in a regular movie with full tongue kisses and some sucking. Not really a guilty pleasure but definately devoid of very much technical merit like most films of its kind, but it does include realistic black magic rituals. But it should've had Linda Blair nude. All in all, an enjoyable erotic horror film.

This movie contains a lot of violence and gore. However the acting and special effects are more like those of a comic book than a serious film.

VHS : Death Wish - The Face Of Death
With this final entry into the Death Wish series, we find Charles Bronson in ....well....yet another situation that requires him to break out the big guns, or perhaps the poisoned cannolis and exploding soccer balls. Paul Kersey has relocated (AGAIN) to New York, this time happily engaged to fashion designer Olivia Regent (Leslie-Ann Down), but things can't stay happy for long as long as ex-husband and mobster Tommy O'Shea and his henchmen are around. O'Shea and his cronies run a protection racket in the clothing warehouse where Regent works, and the manager and some workers end up being brutalized and ultimately killed after they show signs of working with the police to take down the organization. Regent is eventually beaten up and later killed for the same reasons, which spurs our main man into ... Read More

6.Bus Riley's Back in Town starring: Ann-Margret, Michael Parks, Janet Margolin, Brad Dexter, Jocelyn Brando

VHS : Bus Riley's Back in Town
While set in a specific time & place, Bus Riley's dilemma is a timeless one: how does a young, yearning, intelligent person break free of a restrictive society & its many alluring entrapments, and become an individual, following an individual path? Michael Parks delivers a rich, nuanced performance, ably supported by a fine cast. Ann-Margret is a delight as the luscious ex-girlfriend who draws Bus back into her very pleasurable web for awhile -- the film is smart enough not to make her a villain, but simply someone who has it all (or so it seems) but knows that she's still missing something from life. And both Janet Margolin & Kim Darby show why they should have had bigger careers than they did: both are fresh, believable, empathetic. Not everything is neatly tied up by the end, but new ... VHS : The Bible...In the Beginning
This is a Genesis movie that was made in the 1960's and because of this moves in the 60's movie way, it is slow for the modern audience. The dialogue seems to be half pulled from the Bible and half written for a modern audience. But that can be somewhat forgiven.

It does show Creation, Adam and Eve and the Flood. The Noah's Ark portion was my favourite, mostly because I like animals, but also because it shows the point of the story very well. I thought this was the best part of the film altogether.

The film ends with the story of Abraham and the sacrifice of Isaac, which I felt was pretty well done. The part of the Abraham story I didn't like was the portrayal of Ishmael as some evil sort of child corrupted by his mother. That seemed really unnecessary.

But, being from ... Read More

8.China Lake Murders starring: Tom Skerritt, Isaac Allan, Michael Parks, Nancy Everhard, Lauren Tewes

VHS : China Lake Murders
Originally released on cable television back in the early 90s, THE CHINA LAKE MURDERS is a surprisingly effective thriller thanks to good direction, acting, and writing. The story of a deranged policeman's annual killing spree in a small town and the local cop who engages him in a dangerous game of wits is played out in a strong, suspenseful drama that builds to a satisfying climax. Setting and atmosphere are particularly well developed, and despite the exploitable subject matter nothing ever goes over the top, adding a layer of believability which ratchets the suspense even higher. Tom Skerritt is great as Sherriff Sam Brodie, and Nancy Everhard is a strong and appealing romantic interest for him. Doesn't get played on TV as often as it once did and not readily available on home video either, THE CHINA LAKE ... Read More

VHS : Kill Bill, Volume 2
I want to make it VERY clear, the three stars are NOT for the movie. Kill Bill, in my view, is one of the best movies ever made but this evaluation is for THIS Kill Bill Blu-ray release.

I am totally sold on Blu and, when the Kill Bill bundle became available... well... I ordered it when Amazon offered it at a great discount. The bundle includes Kill Bill 1 and 2 and, IF you wish to upgrade your KBs I highly recommend the bundle because you could save a few dollars. There is no difference between the 2 KBs sold as individual titles and them sold together other than, possibly, the price.

I wish I had a lot to say about the Blu-ray version but I don't so, let me say what is worth saying:

- The contents of the Blu-ray version are EXACTLY those of the DVD edition, nothing more, nothing ... Read More

VHS : Savannah Smiles
Savannah Smiles was filmed in Utah. It has been one of our
family favorites for several years. It is the story of a well
to do little girl who is feeling neglected at home. She stowes
away in the back seat of the car of two bungling robbers who
decide to hold her for ransome. She is so loveable that she
ends up stealing their hearts as well as the viewer's. It is
a warm hearted family film that we have watched numerous times
over the years. (We just replaced our worn out VHS copy with a DVD)
