VHS : Holocaust (The Mini-Series)
I saw the miniseries HOLOCAUST as a child. I couldn't believe that people could be so cruel. I never forgot it.
I also remember the heroism. You know, it really is an uplifting film.
I lent the tape to a teacher friend of mine, and her students got it. They asked questions. They wanted to learn more about this period in history. They wanted to know more about man's inhumanity to man.
I'm going to keep lending that tape. I want people to learn.

VHS : Return to Salem's Lot
If your a fan of 80's B-Movies like myself, this one is a must-have in your collection. While this doesn't compare to the original Salem's Lot, there is still entertaining humor to be had in this one. Most will rate this film terrible, but as the title of my review goes, it's only for the campy B-Movie collector only. too bad it's not officially on DVD....

I remember watching this when I was a junior high student. It was the first I had heard of the horrible fate of six million European Jews under Hitler's Nazi Europe. It was so moving and heartbreaking that I remember crying several times. When I visited the Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C., one of the curators told me that this series really gave Americans their first realistic glimpse of Jewish life in Nazi Germany

I watched it again and was still incredibly moved. The Family Weiss is the story of many families in 1930's Germany, Josef, the kind hearted doctor, heads the family, his wife Berta, the strong musically gifted mother, Karl, the shy sensitive artist so in love with his Christian wife Inga, Rudi the hotheaded athlete just coming into manhood and finally teenager Anna. ... When someone needs him. When an abusive hunter's Beagle escapes and takes refuge with Marty's family, the boy realizes he's the dog's only hope.

If only we can be what our dogs believe we are. That uncompromising love made a young boy a man. You see Marty slowly changing as he learns new skills and devotes his life to saving an animal that was counting on him.

It's a great family story and one that even a cat lover could relate to. Well done and well worth seeing over and over.

I read James Mills novel long before I ever saw the film. When it played in early 1974, it came and went without much notice, being overshadowed that year by (late 1973's) SERPICO and MAGNUM FORCE. Too bad. This is a solid crime drama, written by 2 noteworthy screenwriters, Abby Mann (KOJAK) and Ernest Tidyman (SHAFT)and probably would have gotten raves and Emmey consideration had it been a made for TV pic. REPORT reflects NYPD corruption of the 1970's but the main storyline is men in crisis: a naive cop (Michael Moriarty) and a drug dealer (Tony King in a powerhouse turn)gun barrell to gun barrell in a Saks 5th Ave. elevator; The NYPD brass (played by classic character vets as Dana Elcar, Ed Grover, Hector Elizondo)concocting a high level whitewash; a veteran detective (Yaphet Kotto) who must resort to brutality ... I remember watching this film when it first came out about 20 years ago. It was a powerful film about a group of people who have never really been honored for the sacrifices they endured for their country. The political agenda driving Hollywood made it into a small film that not many people got a chance to see. It seems like nothing much has changed in 20 years. Why is this film only going to be made available on November 11th? Does it have anything to do with the fact that there is an election going to happen in this country the week previous to that? Perhaps the powers that be don't want Americans to see a powerful representation of the experiences of one of the candidates. Especially if that candidate is the one that Hollywood has aligned itself against. I find it hard to believe that there is no stock of this ... Read More

"Q" is one of my favorite films. Helmed by one of the great cult writer/directors, Larry Cohen, this movie is an outrageous blast! Michael Moriarty is PERFECT as the much put-upon Jimmy Quinn, a small-time hood/loser who stumbles upon the hidden nest of an ancient creature that's decapitating roof-top sun-bathers and window-washers! Awesome! Of course, being a cynical, world-weary type of fella, Quinn decides to keep the location of the murderous monster a secret until the city coughs up some serious green. Moriarty's voice inflections and mannerisms are absolutely infectious! At one point, at the end of his emotional rope, he lies down on the couch and drones out a line from a scat song he performs on the soundtrack: "Evil dream, go away!" David Carradine provides solid support, also, as the cop on the trail of the flying ... Read More

Sly plays a human being for a change--and I dug the hell out of it. He only raises his voices once--during a shouting match with the always convincing Ray Liotta.
Entire cast is amazing. You know who they are, so there is no need to list all the names.

Smartly written and directed by the talented James Mangold. This is a real movie (for grownups) and not some mindless shoot-'em up.
Mangold, as writer, first and foremost, understands the importance of strong character development and the stories he tries to tell (usually) have substance and are about something.
