VHS : Batman Returns
Michael Keaton.Danny DeVito.Michelle Pfieffer.Christopher Walken.Four excellent actors together in one of the darkest takes on Batman:Batman Returns.Batman(Keaton)must rid Gotham City of the bizarre and sinister sewer-dwelling monster, Penguin(DeVito),the mysterious and sultry Catwoman(Pfieffer), and the CEO tycoon Max Shreck(Walken).

This obviously Tim Burton movie shows that Batman is the best from the flashy effects, dark settings, and eye-captivating plot, puts Batman Returns on one of the best batman movies(The Dark Knight was the best)in my eyes.Keaton obviously knows when he's got a good gig too!But I must warn parents that this movie is definatly PG-13 for a reason!(Very dark and scary for children under ten, especially DeVito's Penguin)!

VHS : Phantom of the Opera (1962)
I viewed three versions(1925, 1962 and 2004) of "The Phantom of the Opera" and enjoyed the ones made in 1962 and in 2004. I love the story of the 1962 version;the phantom is proved to be a respected music professor, a victim also a hero(by saving Christine's life) and people find out who is the actual "monster". Its stage is taken place in London Opera House instead of Paris.

Before there was "Tommy", and "The Boyfriend", and a lot of other Ken Russell films that deserve to be forgotten, there was "Women in Love", "The Music Lovers", "The Devils", and this little gem. Read the other reviews for their insightful comments. I would only like to add that what sets this particular film apart is Russell's use of the sculptor's own works to emphasize the beauty and originiality of Gaudier-Breszka's vision. Russell's films (even the bad ones) are all visually striking. Here he has help from the small extant collection of the sculptures themselves. As befits the biography of a visual artist, this film is a treat for the eye as well as the spirit.

I did my senior research paper on the original Edith Wharton novel, and the film is so faithful to her original language and vision that I was nearly knocked backward by the brilliance of this ravishingly intoxicating film. All of the symbolism of the novel is here, including the colors and flowers associated with May and Ellen respectively. Whenever I read the novel, I always see Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day Lewis as the ill-fated lovers in my mind, and I very much wish that Michelle Pfeiffer had been been honored with the Oscar for Best Actress for what is very much her finest performance to date. Besides Pfeiffer and Lewis, the rest of the cast is spell-bindingly brilliant, without a weak link in sight. All in all, this is the most faithful adaptation of a novel ever put on film, and the most ... Read More

I'd seen this at the drive-in when I was a child. My mom used to take us to horror films alot when I was a kid & I've always enjoyed them. There was much suspense when Jason tried to escape, I recall us yelling at the screen... "Run, Jason, Run"! A fun horror flick I think others would enjoy. Also recommended: The Confessional (1975)

The film opens on an English textile mill that is up for sale. It uses man-made fibers. A device attracts attention by management. Who authorized it? At what cost? A graduate from Cambridge was experimenting and discovered what the result was. The scenes show life in the 1940s. The monetary figures date this story. One firm bought an electronic microscope and needs Mr. Stratton's help. [No employee badges then.] There is a romance between Daphne Birnley, the millionaire mill owner's daughter, and the owner of that small mill. Stratton has an idea for the polymerization of molecules to develop a long chain that will revolutionize the textile industry. Will it have unintended consequences? Sidney Stratton goes to see Mr. Birnley. There is comedy in the interaction of people who don't understand each other. But the mill owner wants to beat the competition. ... Read More

The various blanket infringements on the rights of American citizens and others since the criminal events of 9/11 hardly represent the first time that the American government has seen fit to curtail those rights. The Palmer Raids roundup of reds, radicals and foreigners in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution at the tail end of World War I comes to mind. As done the subject of this film, the red scare against communist and other labor radicals after World War II with the onset of the Cold War against the Soviet Union, a former ally. The name of this period narrowly is given in the history books as the McCarthy witch-hunt era, although that hardly dose justice to the widespread political paranoia, high and low, in America at that time. The signature event was the execution of the Rosenbergs, Julius and Ethel, for passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. ... Read More
