VHS : Lolita (1997)
This film gets better and better each time I watch it. I never seem to tire of it. It has a fantastic poetic quality that takes it's cues from the novel. One of the greatest love tragedies I have ever come across. Not demon film everyone makes it out to be. A masterpiece in every sense of the word and Lyne's best film.

A must see for anyone who loves a good, honest love tale.

The other reviews are accurate. This is beautifully crafted film. The plot however turns around a lesbian relationship. Lesbians are compassionate and wonderful, Christians are small minded, ignorant, and repressive. Unless you want to be fed pro homosexual, anti Christian propaganda skip this film, no matter how well made it is.

VHS : Spellbound
Hitchcock elicits a mixed bag of emotions from me. I am just a little too young to have been transfixed, dare I say spellbound?, by the man and his works as millions of Americans were during Hitchcock's peak. Being a callow youth at the tale end, so to speak, of his career and unappreciative of the art I remember that Birds scared the b'jeezus out of me, that I was too young to watch Psycho, and very little else.
Everything else I saw at a later date seemed fine but dated, perhaps quaint. It came as a huge surprise then to finally discover and appreciate the man's art simply by watching this movie.
The story revolves around a young professional woman who goes on the lam with a man who is at once her boss, her patient, her true love and a murderer. Sounds complicated, I know, and perhaps ... Read More

VHS : Star Trek - The Original Series: The Cage (Pilot)
It's not often you get to own television history of what was to become a Star Trek phenom. Reading the back of the box "Airdate:Never shown on TV!" in red ink is something! Many people make comparisons between Pike and Kirk. Everyone says it's the acting of William Shatner vs. Jeffrey Hunter with Hunter's Pike seeming to think too much vs. Shatner's Kirk being more energetic. Shatner replaced Hunter so Kirk was written to be more energetic, have more fight scenes, being the womanizing captain in nearly every episode. Personally I think Jeffrey Hunter was cuter than Shatner was. There are two things prophetic about the Cage. Telosian illusion is comparable to Holodecks in Star Trek The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine which is interesting because no one could've predicted Star Trek would sell later until it ... VHS : Phantom of the Opera (1962)
I viewed three versions(1925, 1962 and 2004) of "The Phantom of the Opera" and enjoyed the ones made in 1962 and in 2004. I love the story of the 1962 version;the phantom is proved to be a respected music professor, a victim also a hero(by saving Christine's life) and people find out who is the actual "monster". Its stage is taken place in London Opera House instead of Paris.

Well organized DVD, with plenty of extras. Learned quite a bit behind the scenes. Effective box, captures the Dirty Harry feel. You can't go wrong unless you are going to Blue Ray.

VHS : Whore (Rated)
Director Ken Russell has never been accused of understatement, and this in-your-face character study of a jaded streetwalker is no exception. Theresa Russell chews major scenery in the lead role. The film has been misunderstood by viewers who miss the black comic undertones (I find it interesting that in 2006, no one blinks at Amy Sedaris' broad portrayal of a 42 year-old ex-hooker going back to high school on Comedy Central's "Strangers With Candy", but we still have reviewers tsk-tsking over Russell's 1991 treatment of the subject!) There are pacing issues that betray the story's stage play origins. Russell's character addresses the audience throughout, making the story a bit "talky" at times. In fact, characters in the film spend much more time TALKING about sex than actually engaging in it! Definitely a cult item. Currently not available on ... Read More

VHS : Latino
Make no mistake this is a film that involves a political war and a small piece of history that most of us won't be aware of but while the story itself is made up the facts of what occurred is real.
Robert Beltran gives a great performance of a Latino green beret who comes to question his assignment and ultimately wakes up the viewer to ask themselves if what the government is doing at any given time the right thing. After all we are only told bits and pieces of these things and films such as this one help to clarify. To bad it's only available on vhs.

VHS : It's a Great Feeling
Joan Crawford has a very rare cameo (perhaps the only cameo of her professional career, besides "Hollywood Canteen") in this late 40's Warners picture. It's somewhat of a spoof of the grand Hollywood-like movies of the Golden Era. Joan mocks herself in a comical way in her brief scene. She came across as very funny and believable because she was really just being herself in this movie. If you're a Joan Crawford fan or a fan of 40's cinema then I certainly recommend this Technicolor classic.
