VHS : A Christmas Carol
This is by far the best version of 'A Christmas Carol'. George C. Scott is Scrooge, and he brings to the role a depth of feeling and sincerity not seen in other versions. Fun for the whole family. We look forward to it every Christmas season, and it never gets old.

I read the book & found it to be a great horror story. I have the VHS version of the movie & enjoyed it very much & found that it follows the book quite well except possibly the ending was slightly different. Scott Glenn was great. I would like to find out if this movie is also now available on DVD as many of the VHS movis have been converted to DVD in the latest format & audio techniques.

VHS : Hamlet (1990)
After seeing Olivier's version of Hamlet, I was interested in seeing this version of Hamlet. Admittedly, Mel Gibson was one-hundred percent of my impulse to see this film. I don't usually follow actors when choosing movies; I trust directors more than I trust actors in choosing movies. But Mel Gibson is an exception to this rule: when was the last time the man made a bad movie?-- I can't even think of one.

With this said, I rented this movie and watched it with growing delight and amazement. As always, Mel was Mel--great. Glen Close--great. The actors and actresses, from Mel Gibson, to Glen Close,to Alan Bates, to Ian Holmes, etc., delivered the complicated verses of the Bard's epic tragedy as though those words were their very own words. And those words, though fast and often ferocious, ... Read More

VHS : Mighty Aphrodite
Mighty Aphrodite (1995) won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Mira Sorvino, and a nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Woody Allen. Sorvino, the Harvard educated daughter of actor Paul Sorvino, plays a squeaky-voiced, potty mouth hooker. Her character is none too bright, and though she aspires to be an actress, and has appeared in several pornographic films, she is terrible. Somewhat of a stretch, considering that Mira Sorvino is an Academy Award winner, and she graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in East Asian Studies. While at Harvard, she helped found the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones, one of Harvard's premier co-ed a cappella groups, not to mention spending a year of study in Beijing. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and also speaks French. The Oscar win is even more ... Read More

VHS : Frosty Returns
Okay. Sat down to watch this for the first time with my son figuring that it would be good ole' Frosty with a new storyline. Wrong. We got about 5 minutes into it and I realized that someone had hi-jacked a kids character and storyline and replaced it with greeny, pagan propaganda. First, one of the little boys says "Let's go outside and make a fertility goddess". I'm like.....what the.....what the ....what is this doing in a kids Christmas time animated classic? Then the fact that Frosty doesn't need his magic hat anymore. Then the obvious corporate knocking message about a snow eliminating spray. That was it. Turned it off and instead put in the original Rankin-Bass classic. This one is going to get hung in the window as a sun catcher, that is all it is good for.

VHS : Clara's Heart
This film is more than it wants to be. The critic and cynic in me would gleefully join Mr. Marshall Fine in enumerating the many ways this film tries to manipulate its audience. First on my list would be the score by Dave Grusin which acts as a musical leash to pull the audience where they probably would have gone anyway. But that is where I will stop, because although the film does everything in its power to convince us it's the cinematic equivalent of Prozac, it betrays this image by containing subtle, powerful insights that set it apart from its saccharine ilk. There IS something different here, you just have to know where to look. Its not so much about what Clara does for David, a lot of his problems remain after her departure... What is special about "Clara's Heart" is that its about the indestructible bond that unites ... Read More
