VHS : Exotica
If you buy this movie thinking that you buy an exotic or "erotic" (judging by the cover) movie you are WRONG! The movie is so boring and the story so long and stupid that the director should have definately picked another title for it! Exotic? where? This is one of those "delicatessen" movies that a few people judge as good because some "real" reviewers (were they drunk?) judged as good,
There isn't really anything interesting about it and there isn't anything that keeps you from wanting to watch it to the end (besides the question: when does this movie get cool?), so don't waste your time and money on it!

VHS : Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina
One of the most visualy stunning costume dramas I have ever seen! Every thing is so beautifu the actors, the costumes which deserved an oscar nomination, the authentic russian sets and a great score. Sophie Marceau is beautiful as Anna but lacks the acting ability to play such a complex character. Sean Bean as Vronsky and Sophie Marceau have great chemistry. The film has sparks of greatness but fails. Some scenes like the ball scence and Anna's death are beautifuly shot and succeed and most others just seem lukewarm. Levin story is cut to only to a few minutes they probably should have not included him and just focused on Anna's story in my opinion. It pains me to say this but the film is wort buying if only for the visuals. I watch my copy on mute most of the time listing to Air.

Add this one to your movie marathon with Less Than Zero and Bright Lights, Big City. It has that same feel as the earlier films except for the grisly real-life murder that ends the tale. Performances are solid - particularly Green's - and the sets and costume design are great. Chloe Sevigny, of course, is here - I mean she would have to be, wouldn't she? Anyway, it is very entertaining in that falsely glamorous, trashy way. Very good soundtrack.

"Speed of Life" is an independent film that is incredibly under the radar, even for an indie movie. I'm surprised that a moivel ike this didn't get a lot more publicity than it did, because it is a really really great and powerful movie. It stars Scott Caan as Drew, an ex-heroin addict and college dropout who spends his time caring for his invalid father (Leo Burmeister, who's really good). Then Drew meets Sarah (Mia Kirshiner) and his world is turned upside down. As Sarah draws Drew back into his old habits and Drew's friend Satan enters the picture, the movie progresses to a final shocking climax. In many ways, although this isn't a movie I should compare it to, this movie is like "The Brown Bunny". Except with that film, the end gave the film purpose. In this movie, the end just shocks us. The movie, for the first half, ... Read More

If you like movies like "Fried Green Tomatoes" and "Crimes of the Heart", or "Practical Magic" then you'll love this Southern tale. The story is told through the eyes of a young boy recently orphaned by his mother and a seemingly uncaring, grieving father. Sent to live with a mis-matched pair of spinster Aunts, the boy learns that love is not always what it seems and can be found in the most unlikely characters.

This film is actually much better than the cheesy cover indicates. As a fan of Adam Beach (Native American actor)I decided to give it a try...mostly revolving around the central mother-daughter relationship which is tense and sad, the film slowly moves toward reconciliation and discovery for both. However, the film does not have the hollywood ending you would expect (thank God): It is real and sweet but with a bitterness that will make you think about the characters long afterwards. The cast does a great job, the location (once out of innercity California) is beautiful...I only wish the relationship with Will on the daughter's side was played out in full instead of relying so heavily on the mother-daughter traumas. Still, the scene where Page (Mia Kirshner)meets Will (Beach) in the Indian burial ground was perfect.

This is a movie I did not fully appreciate until after it was over and I wanted to watch it again. The premise is, poor girl Alicia goes to a rich person's school where everyone except her is amoral, meaning in plain English they like sex and drugs. But wait a minute. Who is really into sex and drugs in this movie? Who is really envious of whom? Alicia, who is supposed to be the moral poor girl, ends up in hospital due to a drug overdose. Is Hadley, who is far wealthier than Alicia, really envious of her and not the other way around? Why do we feel such intense sympathy for the comatose Alicia? And why is some of the music, especially the music that plays at the end while the credits are running, so haunting?

This film plays with your mind as you watch it and does not get caught in the process. Great acting ... Read More

VHS : Not Another Teen Movie
This is where the scary movie writers branched off to make [insert other genre] movie spoofs, and this is the point where it all started to go even further downhill.

This claims to be "Not Another Teen Movie", but it really couldn't be anything BUT another teen movie. Made to appeal to those who were sickened by cheesy pop romantic comedies like 10 things I hate about you and She's All That, it takes a huge truckload of potty humor and sex jokes that teens would like and throws AS MANY OF THEM AS IT CAN at you over the course of the movie. It's simply on the other side of the "teen" spectrum, banking on all the other teen movies to fuel its own popularity.

While I did enjoy the cute little references to 80s movies thrown in here and there, most of the movie was just boring and unfunny parodies. In fact, the ... Read More
