A cameo on Frederick Chopin in his short lifespan. Wilde and Oberon give excellent performances and Paul Muni shines in this one. if you like a good story, lovely music and beautiful scenery, this is a classic well worth adding to your collection. Flicks of this quality, once made, will never be made again

VHS : Private Life of Henry VIII
in the opening credits. She was a good, pious woman therefore, boring. We find wife # 2, Anne, about to lose her head. She was accused of adultry & incest. The charges were probably bogus. The real problem was that Henry was bored with her & had fallen in love with his mistress, Jane. No political treatise this. It may the first Henry VIII talkie. It was a big hit, made in England & launched Charles Laughton's career. Today 75 years later, it is really amusing. I can't imagine the Brits being so devoid of humor that this was supposed to be serious. Jane gives Henry a son & promptly dies for the effort. Next is another Anne, imported from Europe, at the urging of his court & obstensibly his subjects. He didn't care for her & they spent their wedding night playing cards. They ... Read More

Henry Koster directed many films with considerable charm and flair... His attempts at drama were for the most part less successful but always visually pleasant... He was nominated for an Academy Award for directing "The Bishop's Wife" in 1947... His reputation as a skilled artist led to his assignment as director of the first film in CinemaScope, "The Robe."

Koster does manage to keep the dynamism of "Désirée" and is excellent on both the technical level as on the screen acting... The film won Oscar Nominations for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Color & Best Costume Design...

His high moment of the film was 'The Coronation Ceremony' where after the blessing of the crowns Napoleon seizes the crown from the Pope Pius VII and crowns first himself, then Josephine (Merle ... Read More

VHS : Dark Angel (1934)
Although the 1935 version of THE DARK ANGEL was a remake of an earlier silent film, it too seems to have disappeared into obscurity--and what a shame! This movie will not appeal to fans of the current brand of Hollywood "love stories", where the hero and heroine (or same sex couples in some cases) slip easily into bed together after only just meeting, several car chases and shoot-outs ensue, and the plots remind you of the last Meg Ryan film you saw because they are all the same--and they are filmed in color. THE DARK ANGEL is from an entirely different era of film making: the glorious 1930s. A time when movies, particularly love stories, depended on a good script and good acting to keep the viewer watching, and if successful in both these areas, the viewer won't notice that the movie is in black and white. And ... Read More

VHS : Beloved Enemy
Beloved Enemy is a fictional story based on when Britian occupied Ireland. It's supposed to be about the Irish
resistance.
Basic storyline:
The British are trying to put an end to the resistance, and
there is a particular Irish leader who they are trying to catch
and they don't even what he looks like. A British official comes, bringing his daughter with him. His daughter meets an Irish man who she falls in love with, but finds out he is the resistance leader her people are seeking to arrest. Their differences make it hard for them as she is closely watched. The two countries seek for peace and...
well, that's the basic story.
It's supposed to be about the resistance but I think it's mainly just a romance story.

VHS : Hotel
I'm moving and giving up my VHS plyer, having got most of my favorite flicks on discs. But I won't give it up if it means never seeing "Hotel" again. It sets such a mood; puts you right into the hotel and the era.
Almost everything about it is perfect, and what isn't, is campy.(like the decor of the hotel lobby) Rod Taylor is one of the sexiest men ever to hit the screen, i agree that while C. Spaak is gorgeous and classy, and a good actress; her spine is not straight, she looks kind of deformed about the shoulder area, and i guess no effort was made to hide it, but she's still lovely. I love the score, it has just the right haunting quality, and each character has his own theme. Larger-than-life, as always, Kevin McCarthy nearly steals the show, as the heavy. And that heartbreaking moment when Merle Oberon tries ... Read More

When my son was in junior high, we watched this film together because I'd recently read the book for a college class I was taking. As an adult, he remembered that he had enjoyed it, so I ordered it for him. He loved it once again and has added it to his collection of classic films. It really is a great little story, and I think this version is well done.
