VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: Clouds of Witness
Dorothy L. Sayers writes many non-fiction books however among her best is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I came to this series sort of though the back door. My first taste was the BBC productions with Petherbridge as Lord Peter that can now be found on DVD ASIN: B000062XDX. So I read all of Dorothy's books containing the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Now it is time to go through the whole series.
Now I watch the one I missed in PBS. The first thing I notices was that Ian Carmichael talks much faster than Petherbridge. And all the people seem older. Of course Peter was supposed to be older when he met Harriet.

Lord Peter returns from Corsica. To find his older brother the Duke of Denver (David Langton) practically accused of murder. What is worse is his ... Read More

VHS : Goodnight Mister Tom
This is a 'nice' movie, with a typically strong performance from John Thaw. However, if you have read the novel, you may find this small screen adaptation disappointing. To compact this touching story into 90 minutes the director has sacrificed any real character development, and in doing so has lost most of the emotional impact created in the novel. Still, it's okay for a rainy afternoon.

VHS : Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries (Strong Poison / Have His Carcase / Gaudy Night)
A magnificent 1987 BBC trilogy adaptation of Lord Peter Wimsey "Strong Poison," "Have His Carcass" and "Gaudy Night."
Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries is like most british television productions. A superb theatrical adaptation of Dorothy L. Sayers mystery novels. These version of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane are very different than Ian Carmichael's LPW, roll he played from 1972 to 1975.
Edward Petherbridge as the wealthy, romantic, amateur sleuth debonair "Lord Peter Wimsey" and Harriet Walter the enchanting writer on trial accused of murdering her lover "Harriet Vane".

VHS : Gaudy Night (Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries)
"From women's eyes this doctrine I derive: they sparkle still the right Promethean fire; they are the books, the arts, the academes, that show, contain, and nourish all the world."
-Love's Labour Lost

This is the third Dorothy L. Sayers novel in which mystery writer Harriet Vane has been pursued by Lord Peter Wimsey, but this one has the added attraction of being set at Shrewsbury, an all-women's college at Oxford. Oxford is much more than just a backdrop, however, as it is one of the few places (c. 1930) where women live and are encouraged to live independent lives. Independence, namely her own, is one of the things that Harriet Vane want to preserve. When Harriet, an Oxford graduate, returns to her alma mater to attend a yearly celebration known as "gaudy night", she is re-visiting ... Read More

Having just finished watching series 2 of The House of Cards trilogy, the end left me with my eyes wide open, saying "wow"!, not usually one of my favourite expressions. In this series, Francis Urquhart is Prime Minister of Britain and is battling with the King on most of his governments policies, urging him to adopt more lenient policies regarding benefits for the poor and disadvantaged while Urquhart's party is distinctly right wing. The character of the King, played to perfection by actor Michael Kitchen (Foyle's War etc.)is clearly based on Prince Charles, using his speech patterns and bodily gestures and that of his sister(in the show) is based on his real lfe aunt, Princess Margaret. I usually combine watching any form of TV with needlework but, on this occasion, couldn't bear to tear my eyes away from the ... Read More

I'm not sure how this charming little comedy escaped me for so long but I'm certainly glad I finally saw it. This 1998 film is directed by Rose Troche ("Go Fish") and stars Kevin McKidd as Leo (Lucius Vorenus in the HBO series "Rome"), James Purefoy as Brendan (Mark Antony in the same series), Simon Callow as Keith, whom I remembered from "Four Weddings and a Funeral", Hugo Weaving as Jeremy ("The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"), Tom Hollander as Darren ("Gosford Park") and Jennifer Ehle as Sarah ("Pride and Prejudice").

The plot is a hoot. Leo, who plays a young gay man having difficulty with relationships joins one of these men's groups made famous in the U. S. by the likes of the poet Robert Bly where its members get in touch with their manhood by camping out, beating on drums, handling ... Read More

I love this movie. I owned it on VHS and was looking to upgrade, so I bought this DVD. It's a 2 sided disc so you have to turn the disc over half way through the movie just to watch the rest. Lame. I was also a bit disappointed that the video by Bryan Adams wasn't at the end with the credits like it was on the VHS. It was also at the end of the movie in the movie theatre too, so I'm not sure why they would exclude it on the DVD. I love this movie and hate to give it any thing less than a 4, but because of the DVD format, I'm giving it a 2.
