VHS : New Best Friend
This is a movie I did not fully appreciate until after it was over and I wanted to watch it again. The premise is, poor girl Alicia goes to a rich person's school where everyone except her is amoral, meaning in plain English they like sex and drugs. But wait a minute. Who is really into sex and drugs in this movie? Who is really envious of whom? Alicia, who is supposed to be the moral poor girl, ends up in hospital due to a drug overdose. Is Hadley, who is far wealthier than Alicia, really envious of her and not the other way around? Why do we feel such intense sympathy for the comatose Alicia? And why is some of the music, especially the music that plays at the end while the credits are running, so haunting?

This film plays with your mind as you watch it and does not get ... Read More

VHS : Full Ride
Excellent example of the disaster that happens when you combine a challenging script with two actors choosen for physical appeal. It is rare for me to be consciously aware of the acting during the first viewing of a movie because I try to just go with the story and save the analysis for the second viewing. In the case of "Full Ride", the acting was so weak that the movie was impossible to appreciate as a story; I was too busy (during first and only viewing) alternating between laughter and nausea.

Fortunately for most individual members of the cast, pretty much everyone in the ensemble is weak, the individual talent limitations do not contrast with any actual competent acting. Riley Smith and Meredith Monroe are at least well matched physically, finding common ground in looking far ... Read More

VHS : Year That Trembled
A very well made independant film!!!!! And two of my favourite subjects rolled into one: Vietnam and Jonathan Brandis!!! Well done!!! I phrase Jonathan Brandis' performance. he was really good. I wish he had been given the oppotunity to take his career forward. I have for the past few months been thinking about Jonathan Brandis and his tragic death. I received news of his death on my birthday. 'What a way to turn 20? finding out that my teen idol who I admired both as a crush, role model and older brother had taken his life.' I thought at the time. 'Is if I didn't have enough issues to deal with.'
It's sad. There have been speculations that he was depressed about his career, if that was the case, I feel if he had just held on and been patient, his time would have come. I have noticed that the peek of ... Read More
