VHS : A Christmas Story (1983)
So many people cited this as their very favorite Christmas movie, and I'd never seen it, so I figured I should watch it.

Basically, it's about a boy in the 1940s who wants a BB gun for Christmas. It's set in the 1940s. Rather than a single, linear story, it's a series of scenes about their life in the 1940s. Did I mention that it's set in the 1940s? Argh. Obviously, the filmmakers spent a lot of time and money getting the setting just right, because they beat the audience over the head with it every chance they got. Drove me up a wall, in case you didn't notice.

It's also got the first-person voice-overs from grown-up Ralphie. If you watched The Wonder Years, it's like that. A grown-up navel-gazing about his childhood. It's almost as entertaining as listening to someone ... Read More

I can't begin to tell you how this movie affected me when I saw it. Being an adolescent when I saw this made me believe that that was what true love really was about. The music to this day sends chills through me. I think one of the other reviewers summed up all the psychological nuances in the film. I decided at that time I did not want my life to end up like, Brubaker or his wife's. I saw the film for love. When He made it on the plane it was like yes this is how life should be! I loved the show, loved the music. Catherine was my very first crush and I would follow her anywhere. I have tried to live my life like I belive Brubaker and Catherine did after they landed in Paris. Its a great period movie but it says so much that is still applicable to life in the 21st century. Some things never change. ... Read More

VHS : Close Encounters of the Third Kind (The Collector's Edition)
One thing it might mean is that this is one of the most unique science fiction films ever made. I recently watched it with my wife (who very rarely enjoys any kind of sci-fi), a friend, and that friend's wife (who simply detests all sci-fi). Yet everyone enjoyed it. (My friend and I had already seen it.)

"This means something," is a recurring line throughout CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, similar to "I've got a bad feeling about this," in the STAR WARS films. So, the dialogue is not the best ever written. But CE3K contains a human element interwoven throughout both the character development as well as the plot development that you're unlikely to find any other science fiction film, and certain not to find in any other UFO film.

Often great movies get cloned and copied, and fans ... Read More

To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar is a cute and funny film about three drag queens who want to be legends. Patrick Swayze is the prettiest man/woman ever! Wesley Snipes, well he isn't so graceful. This is a great buddy buddy flick, check it out sometime.

I can't improve on the first sentence from W.Corse's excellent 2/3/05 review:

"Absence of Malice is one of my all-time favorites, and the first "older" movie that I grabbed when it was finally released on DVD. In my opinion this is one film that should be required viewing for every journalism major in the USA. "

Some of other reviewers' comments make my eyes cross.
(1) The movie is "slow"? (Not if you're paying attention to Paul Newman's brick-by-brick implementation of an utterly brilliant revenge.)
(2) Sally Fields doesn't look too good? (I think she looks better in this film than she's ever looked.)
(3) The "attraction" between Newman/Field is silly/implausible/the film's weak spot? (I disagree. The scenes with these two are some of the best written/best acted you'll ever ... Read More

The reviewer below claims there is a region Free (o) dvd available on Amazonuk. Don't be fooled. It is still in the PAL format and will not play on American/Canadian DVD players. The VHS is the only way you'll see this film until someone releases it in this country. Region O in the Pal format still means it's a PAL dvd. Don't waste your money like I did. It must say Region FREE all regions!!! Don't believe everything you read here!!!!

The details and attitudes of this film are quite accurate. I have had the pleasure of working with two atom bomb "test subjects", two of over 235,000 soldiers deliberately exposed to radiation of atom bomb testing in the past decade. Their plight is harsh - cancers, breakdown of soft tissue, every case has resemblence to the next. Still, the US government denies wrongdoing and danger to the soldiers of that draft era.

I first caught this movie when it was rerun back in 94...though I missed the first half (and it took me another 6 mos or so before I got to see the movie in its entirety, LOL), what I saw had a powerful impact, to say nothing of the fine acting jobs by Dana Hill as Jennifer, the confused pre-teen looking for an adult she can trust during the difficult times she's going through, and Richard Masur as Howard, the softball coach/pedophile who slowly lures Jennifer into his child pornography ring with the kindness and understanding she needs (he dubs her "Angel", the same pet name he gave his last victim, hence the film's title), then gradually turning to manipulation and further alienation of Jennifer from her mother (Melinda Dillon) and soon-to-be stepfather (Ronny Cox).

Why hasn't this film been rerun on cable (to the best of my knowledge) during ... Read More
