Excellent DVD, a masterpiece. The story was writte specially for her and also the main song (Never on Sunday). An unforgatble performance by M. Mercouri. Don`t miss it if you are a wise collector of such very good things with a very good quality.

VHS : Stella
STELLA / Greece 1955 (3 STARS)
17 December 2003: I had never seen a Greek film before, and Stella made me realize how that was my loss. In one of the most lovable characters ever depicted, Melina Mercouri plays the boisterous character of a night-club singer who's spirit cannot be curbed. The film is light years ahead of its peers and compares with films such as Cabaret which was made decades later.
* Even though some of the filmmaking is technically crude, the Director's vision shines through and Stella's motivations are painstakingly established with the skill of an auteur. Greek culture with its boisterous cacophony is showcased with pride, as we discover that Stella despite her frolicking ways sets herself the highest standards of integrity and is one of the most honest people ... VHS : Topkapi
Topkapi is the former harem of the Sultan of Turkey in Istanbul. There is a museum that contains rich jewels and many armed guards to protect the treasures. "Elizabeth Lipp" introduces us to the museum. Walter Harper agrees to steal the emerald encrusted dagger but will use amateurs who don't have records that will make them suspects to the police. An expert tells how a strain gauge can detect any solid body on the floor. But there is a way to defeat this. Next Elizabeth and Walter pay Arthur Simpson to drive a car across the border. What can be in that car? The secret police arrest Simpson and double him. [I didn't find it funny.] There are scenes of everyday life in Turkey. Next there are some comic scenes due to language difficulties.

Sightseeing shows more scenes of everyday life. ... Read More

VHS : Dream of Passion
I don't want to reveal any "spoilers" about the film, but I do want to make a few clairifications about the previous reviews. This film (which is one of the most powerfrul, emotional movies I've ever seen--notwithstanding I've been in mad crazy love with Melina Mercouri ever since I saw Never on Sunday) is about an actress whose career is in decline (Mercouri), who is doing a film adaption of the play Medea. A publicist discovers that in a local greek jail is an American woman (Burstyn), who murdered her children. "Dream" does a wonderful job of interspersing the Medea plot without beating the viewer over the head about it. Ms. Burstyn's character moves to Greece, doesn't speak the language, doesn't make any friends, becomes lonely and isolated, deeply unhappy. Then the husband sleeps around, and ... Read More

VHS : Nasty Habits
The movie has no "second fiddle" actors or actresses..they are all superb Although there is reference to the "Watergate" political situtations that is only due to the ambitious nuns "bugging" the convent in order to know what's going on throughout their hugh domain without being "so obviously concerned"(after all theirs is a convent made of mostly young women from "upper middle class families" in which dowrys must be given in order to enter"). Their greatest delimenia(when it is time to elect a new abbess) is getting rid of their least "the lady nun" Felicity and keeping away their greatest competition "their nun Gertrude" who they had insisted should continue circuling the globe in missionary work. The video is done very tastefully which one would expect from a movie that was able to do a precise skyline ... Read More

7.Where the Hot Wind Blows starring: Gina Lollobrigida, Pierre Brasseur, Marcello Mastroianni, Melina Mercouri, Yves Montand

VHS : Where the Hot Wind Blows
THE LAW/WHERE THE HOT WIND BLOWS shows Gina Lollobrigida at 31, in top form both as a beautiful woman and as an actress. God, how gorgeous she was, and how hot, sensual, desirable is her Marietta! No wonder every man in town lusts after her! The whole cast is wonderful: Mastroianni, Mercouri, Montand, Stoppa and the great Pierre Brasseur. Jules Dassin's direction does justice to the Vailland novel, for the most part. It is urgent to restore this film and release it in DVD format with extras, including a competent critical commentary.
