VHS : Nobody's Fool (1994)
This is a gentle, small movie about small-town living and its citizens, particularly a blatantly unapologetic ne'er-do-well named Sully (Paul Newman) who has lived his life exactly as he wants to and manages, by optimism and the bonding in this town, to survive quite well in spite of himself.

Sully has co-existed with his former eighth-grade teacher for apparent decades (the great Jessica Tandy, in her next-to-last performance), living in an upstairs apartment and doing - when he remembers to - odd jobs for her as well as keeping an eye on her. He is constantly at odds with her stuffy bank-manager son (Josef Sommer) who wants Sully out of his mother's house; Sully is also at mild odds with several other people in town, including his ex-wife, and an uncredited performance by Bruce ... VHS : Lolita (1997)
This film gets better and better each time I watch it. I never seem to tire of it. It has a fantastic poetic quality that takes it's cues from the novel. One of the greatest love tragedies I have ever come across. Not demon film everyone makes it out to be. A masterpiece in every sense of the word and Lyne's best film.

A must see for anyone who loves a good, honest love tale.

VHS : Now & Then
Now and Then is a coming-of-age tale following the lives of four pre-teen girls. This film mostly takes place in the past rather than the present, this film should've been called Then and Now. Christina Ricci and Gaby Hoffman have the best character development and depth. Demi Moore is the only adult character that seems affected by past hurts and trials from her childhood. Melanie Griffith continues to play the bimbo, she is so much smarter than that! Good film but not a home run.

VHS : Shining Through
My husband and I first viewed Shining Through on television. After it was finished, I realized I had been holding my hand in a fixed position too long and also breathing shallow breaths. We decided to go to our favorite store, Amazon, and see if we could purchase it because it was not a recent movie. As always, we were successful. We have started a DVD library so we can view good selections. Excellant acting, surpise ending which was uplifting. Wonderful mystery with lots of conflict. Melanie Griffith was great. Made Michael Dourglas a favorite of mine. We highly recommend this viewing.

VHS : Underground Aces (1980)
This hooter is noteworthy only for its look at the early Melody Griffith, who was quite young and different when this attempt at a comedy was released in 1980. And Frank Gorshin -- as usual -- gave his role a lot more than it gave to him.

I can only judge this film by the USA version of the DVD, which is what I viewed.

I didn't like it very much. I understand that it was meant to portray a somewhat tawdry lifestyle of strippers in the seedy part of NYC, but this film didn't hold together that well, despite the presence of a first-rate cast.

The nudity (mostly strippers doing their dance routines) made me yawn after a while. I expected some nudity in this movie, and nudity doesn't offend me (I've drawn many nudes in Life Drawing class!). But I thought the dance sequences got to be too long and derivative. Obviously everyone else's mileage will vary on this point, and I guess the fact that I am female is not insignificant in explaining my sentiments.

Jack Scalia, Tom Berenger, Billy Dee Williams and Melanie Griffith are the ... Read More

VHS : Cherry 2000
My friend and I had a pact all through the 1970s and 80s, and we petered out in the 1990s when we realized that what we had was just a pie in the sky. Our mission was to artificially prolong the careers of our two favorite stars, Kim Basinger and Melanie Griffith, by actually showing up in the movie theaters, for all their various releases.

This entailed sometimes a lot of loneliness, as often enough we were the only two paying customers in the theater, but one good thing is we hardly ever had to wait on line. At the multiplex there would be huge long lines for DIE HARD or ROGER RABBIT, but we'd be sitting pretty, able to slip into CHERRY 2000 hours ahead of time and stay for multiple shows if we liked (though this was actually cheating, as we needed our box office dollar to register in the far echoes of Hollywood's ...
