VHS : Psych Out
I saw this when it first came out. At a midnight showing in Oakland California. I thought it an abomination at the time. Hollywood got it, typically, ALL WRONG, wrong look, wrong dialog, wrong clothes, wrong attitudes. Contrary to a previous review, this movie was not filmed "on location" (unless you consider Culver City an annex of San Francisco). Of all the actors, only Bruce Dern had an authentic aura about him, but the guy was born a bohemian/hippie. I had never seen Jack Nicholson before but I left the theater thinking I'd never see him again, so lousy was his acting. (How wrong could I be!) He was the antithesis of people in & around the Haight. All that said, let me confess that I think Nicholson is one of the outstanding actors of film history (though not in this movie). I also ... VHS : Topaze
I can't believe that this delightful little movie is completely unmentioned among the works of John Barrymore and Myrna Loy and largely forgotten. It is a sophistocated and cynical take on modern industrial society and how vice is often rewarded and virtue punished. Barrymore plays Prof. Auguste A. Topaze, and at first it looks like his character is nothing more than a take off on Emil Jannings' Immanuel Rath of The Blue Angel. They are both the stern idealistic schoolmasters of a class of young boys. However, that is where the similarity ends. Both Rath and Topaze find themselves dismissed from their jobs, but where Rath lost his job because of his own moral failings, Topaze has lost his because he refuses to compromise his principles. However, Topaze is not unemployed for long. A twist of fate ... Read More

First, I want to clear up the fact that there are TWO versions of this wonderful story written by none other than the late Rod Serling.

The theatrical version, starring Jackie Gleason, Mickie Rooney, and Anthony Quinn, is available on an (edited) DVD and on (full movie) VHS.
The Playhouse 90 live TV version, starring Keenan Wynn, Ed Wynn, and Jack Palance, available only on VHS, is the version found here.

I have this version and the theatrical VHS of this story, and the theatrical version was the first version I watched.
While the story is good, and the actors are legends, the atmosphere, subtleties, acting, and especially the ending, left me cold.
Then, I bought this, the first performance of it, performed LIVE in 1956, and suddenly Serling's writing comes ... Read More

Most people talk about the violence in this movie and this film does live up to its title. Although I enjoyed the action in The Savage Seven it became the "signature" movie of my teen years for other reasons.

When this movie was released I was a teenager riding a 500 cc Triumph Daytona. After seeing this film some friends and I took a trip to a small town and stayed for a few days. We did not have the same wild adventures as in The Savage Seven but it was my first non-supervised vacation. This movie will always remind me of that coming-of-age trip and the young lady that I met there.

The music in this film stayed in my memory, particularly "The Unconscious Power" and "Maria's Theme". I rode many a mile with these two songs playing in my head.

Most biker movies have their own ... Read More

Since the second grade I have been completely obsessed with this band, and it really i tragic to me that I was born in wrong decade. I loved his movie because it made me feel like I could have ossibly been there, and I'm so glad it came to be, because no I know has ever even heard of Sweetwater, or Nansior any of them, even though they were the first at the furst Woodstock. What an amazing experience that must have been, and I'm so glad this movie tries to give people a glimpse as to what happened to the incredible band. I wish everything would have worked out for Nansi, I saw a video she had made more recently and she still sings amazingly.
Watch this movie, even though I agree, it is hard to recreate the truth without some iffy acting, but Amy Jo Johnson is wonderful and this movie will definitely take ... Read More

6.D.C. Cab starring: Max Gail, Adam Baldwin, Mr. T, Charlie Barnett, Gary Busey

VHS : D.C. Cab
I think this would be one of those movies that receive the 89's cheese award. However it's one of my favorite movies. I love those zany madcap humorous movies. This movie stars Adam Baldwin (Independence Day and no relation to the Baldwin brothers), Max Gail (Barney Miller), Gary Busey, Mr. T, Irene Cara (she has a cameo as well two songs that she sings on the soundtrack), Marsha Warfield (Night Court), Paul Radriguez,Bill Maher and the Barbarian Brothers (David and Peter Paul).

The movie takes place at a taxi cab company in Washington D.C. They are pitted against a rival taxi company called Emerald. D.C. Cab is owned and operated by Harold (Gail) and things aren't going right. They are on the verge of closing down and loosing this drivers. Out comes Adam Baldwin who's father served with Harold in the ... Read More

VHS : Stephen King's The Stand
The Stand is impressive in many ways possible! I know the movie is 6 hours in length put it pulled me in after the first episode. It had a great apocalyptic opening where it can possibly happen in real life with the virus and all. The second half jumps into this supernatural realm where people dare not go and I find that fascinating. I got this movie from a 5 movie collection by Artisan (also had Cujo, Golden Years, The Langoliers, and Thinner) and I received the 2-disc version which is good but its probably better than the flipper disc. I despise flipper discs because they get scratched and broken so easily that its not funny. Lucky me I guess. This would be a great DVD title to come out on Blu-Ray. Imagine the entire 6-hour film on one disc with no flipping or changing. The Golden Years was an amazing disc to me ... Read More

Lou Diamond Phillips cowrote and directed this "erotic thriller" which wants to be 9 ½ Weeks, and LDP's self-casting as a womaniser, providing himself with a full frontal nudity shot partially obscured by opaque glass in a shower stall, seems the ultimate in conceit. 9 ½ Weeks was bearable because of the presence of Kim Basinger, and here LDP casts a Basinger-look alike in Kate Vernon, but Vernon has none of Basinger's natural appeal, even when dressed in Donna Karan. As a psycho-analyst with a best seller entitled Guilty Pleasures, her own radio talk back show, and a private practice, Vernon is a success waiting to be de-pedestalled. So LDP takes the cue from her radio theme tune Sexual Healing and enscribes "I want you" in the copy of her book he shows her at a signing. As we have seen that Vernon has a secret uninhibited sex life, ... Read More
