VHS : Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934)
This beautiful production from the early 1930's of a dark shadow hanging over the promise of glorious love and happiness is perhaps Norma Shearer's lovliest performance. The romance between poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett was filmed with a class and meticulous care only MGM could muster. Under Sidney Franklin's direction, William Daniels' photography, and the period flourish provided by Cedric Gibbons, this became one of the greatest romantic dramas ever to be filmed.

Shearer loses her modern slinky charm and projects a luminous class as Elizabeth Barrett, a shining soul living with illness in a house strangled of love by her cruel and repressed father, played to horrible perfection by Charles Laughton. Her lifeline is her continuing correspondence with fellow poet ... Read More

VHS : A Day at the Races
When the Marx Brothers came to MGM in 1935, boy wonder producer Irving Thalberg had the good commercial sense to package them in a genuine musical comedy which widened their box office appeal enormously although it detracted from the pure gold of their earlier anarchic Paramount comedies.

"A Day at the Races" followed the formula of the hugely successful "A Night at the Opera", but it was was the beginning of the end of their golden period. The problem is simply that while the boys are very good, there is just not enough of them and in inverse proportion, a dumb love story with the charming Allan Jones and the equally charming but sappy Maureen O'Sullivan. Also, there is a notable softening of their characters, particularly Harpo and that diminishes them.

The film also has ... Read More

VHS : Pride and Prejudice
Having read the book (one of my favorites), I just can't stomach this film. What really turned me off was the depiction of Lady Catherine. In the book, that character is never reconciled to the marriage of Darcy and Elizabeth. And where did they get the idea for the archery scene? Certainly not from the book. If you haven't read the book, you might find it entertaining; but for anyone who loves the book, this film just doesn't do it justice.

I have the BBC version and the A&E version. I have not seen the version made this century. Of the two that I have, I would say that the A&E version is the most complete. The BBC version is very good but when the story gets to it's climax, it is rushed to completion as if the writer or editor were trying to wrap-up the story quickly due to time constraints. ... VHS : Strange Interlude
I am not a big movie buff, but purchased this film because I am a fan of silent film star Henry B. Walthall. Walthall is only in the film for the first seven minutes and then his character dies. Rather than losing interest in the film, however, I kept watching and found it very enjoyable. It is a very innovative film, based on the Eugene O'Neill play, that includes thoughts of the characters that are audible to the audience. The main character is Nina Leeds (Norma Shearer). Nina is a very obsessive, neurotic woman who controls the hearts of three men while pining away for her dead fiance Gordon, killed in the Great War. Nina continues to control the lives of her three suitors (one of which is played by Ralph Morgan, brother of the Wizard of Oz). She enters a marriage with a man she does not love and, due to a secret ... Read More

VHS : Tarzan and His Mate
1934's "Tarzan and His Mate" finds Johnny Weissmuller, the quintessinal Tarzan, in his second outing as King of the Apes, defending his mate Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan) from a variety of hazards. Southern California fills in reasonably seamlessly for Africa, while a zoo's worth of animals are either defeated by Tarzan in personal combat or led by him against vicious ivory traders and their savage allies.

As the story opens, Tarzan and Jane are accosted by two English traders, who intend to lure Jane back to civilization and to find and exploit an ancient elephant graveyard for its treasure of ivory. Tarzan proves to be the principal obstacle to both objectives. In a rapid-fire series of action sequences, Tarzan must face down hungry lions, charging rhinos, and rampaging tribesmen, while trying to rescue Jane and ... Read More

VHS : Tarzan Finds a Son
Because of the rules governing film-making, and since Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller) and Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan) weren't legally married, Tarzan had to find a son; he couldn't have one of his own. Thus begins this film. A father, mother, and their baby son are flying to Cape Town when the air becomes choppy and the plane crashes. The baby is the only one to survive. He finds his way to Tarzan who adopts him as his own. As he grows up, Tarzan teaches him how to survive in the jungle. The family becomes very close until five years later when a safari expedition comes looking for the wreckage and to confirm that there were no survivors. When they find that "Boy" (John Sheffield) is alive, they hope to bring him back to claim his inheritance. Tarzan is against it, but Jane believes it might be best for him.

This film never ... Read More

VHS : Tarzan's New York Adventure
Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller), Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan), and Boy (Johnny Sheffield) are living peacefully in the jungle when one day, an airplane lands nearby. Several hunters emerge in hopes of trapping wild animals, especially lions. Tarzan knows the danger of these men, so he warns them to leave, but Boy is curious about their airplane, and tries to befriend them. Seeing that they can use his repore with animals to their advantage, the hunters kidnap him and take him to New York to perform in a traveling circus. Tarzan will have none of their nonsense, regardless of the barriers between the jungle and the city. He and Jane venture to New York to find their son.

One would think that Tarzan in the city would make for a great film, but we have more camp than classic here. This is not unusual for a film in the series at this period in time; ... Read More

VHS : Connecticut Yankee (1931)
Will Rogers was hugely popular during his time, but the years have not been kind to him and he is largely forgotten today. Thankfully, years ago there was a VHS series of Rogers' films released available for viewing. Here we have one of the most famous of his films, A Connecticut Yankee, the story of a man sent back to the Middle Ages when King Arthur ruled. The Mark Twain story has been made many times, but this one deserves recognition.

Rogers plays a radio man who is sent to a dark, scary house to deliver a battery for a radio. When he gets there, he finds there are strange goings on and the man of the house wants to use the battery to transmit sounds from the past into modern times. Suddenly, a flash, and Rogers is being discovered by a knight of Camelot. Believed to be a demon, he is sentenced to death, but Rogers manages to convince the ... Read More
