VHS : Where the Red Fern Grows (2003)
I showed this movie to my 4th graders after reading the book to them. They were a little disappointed with the movie. It left out some crucial scenes that lead the reader/watcher to make a connection to Billy and so the movie is not as meaningful as the book. There were lots of tears in the book, not so many during the movie. My students were also disappointed in the lack of details of some of the biggest scenes in the book, the boy dying with the ax, the hunting competion, the death scene. It's a good movie, but no where near as good as the book.

VHS : Jezebel (1938)
Bette Davis is a goddess, or at least she was. We all know this and if you are not yet acquainted with her prestige line of film performances then I urge you to load up your Netflix queue this very instant. That said, `Jezebel' sports not only one of her finest (Oscar winning) performances but it also serves to be one of the greatest films she every lent her talent to. It was Warner Brothers answer to `Gone with the Wind' (or should I say their answer to Davis' longing for the role of Scarlett O'Hara) and to be completely honest I actually tend to feel that `Jezebel' is the better film.

Please, don't hate me.

The film takes play in the early 1850's in a Louisiana town where a young, headstrong woman shakes up the locals and brings dire consequences on those she ... Read More

While at Camelot the knights are jousting for the appreciation of the beautiful Princess Ilene (Katherine Heigl), viking raiders led by Thagnar (Thomas Kretschman), disguised as Scotsmen, storm the round table room and steal Excalibur. Together with Merlin's spellbook, which the witch Morgane Le Fey (Joanna Lumley) exhumed from the wizard's grave, Excalibur should allow Thagnar's brother Sligon (Udo Kier) to reign over Camelot supreme. Meanwhile King Arthur (Edward Fox), mistakenly worried that an attack by Scotland would be imminent, entrusts the unknown squire Valiant (Stephen Moyer) with the task of escorting Princess Ilene to safety, and an incredible adventure is about to begin .... Comic strips at the scene transitions remind of the origins of the story of "Prince Valiant" who was invented ... Read More

VHS : Angels in the Outfield
In an attempt to repeat the magic and financial success they had with `The Mighty Ducks' (92) two years previously, Disney turned their attention to major league baseball and the hometown Angels. Deciding to do a remake of the '51 film `Angels in the Outfield' which starred Paul Douglas they had all they needed available right from the beginning; a tried and true storyline to work from and access to a local, professional baseball team. What could make things more perfect? Well how about the fact that the team in question just happened to be named the Angels fitting perfectly into the title and theme of the proposed film! Ahh..., the genius of the Disney machine is a beautiful thing to observe isn't it?

The end result of their endeavors, `Angels in the Outfield' is definitely a kid friendly film ... Read More

I wish I could put 5 stars here because I enjoy the movie so much, but I can't because it's not a 5 star movie. It's not a shawshank redemption, an american beauty, or a forrest gump. What it is is a really entertaining movie for anyone who has ever delved into the subcultures of life. If you know the alternate meanings of blotter, rolling, and blunt then you'll probably enjoy it. If if you've ever lived life without regard, or for the sake of getting lost in a moment, you'll like it. If you love Dazed and Confused, but were unfortunately born into the 80s instead of the 60s, you'll like it.

A note of warning, don't buy this movie if you've ever used the phrase "kids these days" in a serious fashion.

VHS : Welcome to the Dollhouse
Welcome to the Dollhouse is a rare and refreshing dark comedy, it's hip, edgy, and all the kids will be talking about it when they're skateboarding and playing hackeysack.

Hey there, how do you like that hip, in your face, logline that I wrote for this movie? I think it's quite proactive. Kidding aside, it is for some reason quite a rare find, even if the subjects it addresses have been milked to death. Adolescent angst, nerds dealing with everyday life and trying to fit in, it's all really chartered territory.

Dollhouse however, presents it in such a dramatic way that it seems quite new; hey, for an hour an a half I WAS an ugly nerdy teenage girl!

While there's no agreed upon distinction between them all, there are many different kinds of misfits. There's nerds, dorks, dweebs, geeks, ... Read More

VHS : Michael Landon: Memories With Laughter & Love
This video is a touching story. When you watch the Little House TV shows you can see the love that was put into it. Michael Landon wrote the words from the heart and says what we would have said. This tribute is a grand idea and I think everyone should see the heart of Michael Landon. I think the video would make him proud.

VHS : White Hot:Murder of Thelma Todd
White Hot: The Mysterious Murder of Thelma Todd is basically faithful to the Andy Edmonds biography on which it is based, but ads fictional details such as private eye investigating the case and an imprisoned gangster who tells him some of the details of the case. Roland West is portrayed as quite a bit youg than he really was, and Pat di Cicco is portrayed as quite a bit older than he really was. Somehow, Zasu Pitts is left out of the story altogether, Patsy Kelly is here portrayed as being Thelma's screen partner all along ( actually Thelma Todd was first teamed with Zasu Pitts ) but Loni Anderson did a good job of portraying Thelma Todd and altogether it made and entertaining mystery movie for television.
