VHS : Where Eagles Dare
Clint Eastwood probably mowed down more of Adolf Hitler's German soldiers in Brian G. Hutton's "Where Eagles Dare" than he did western outlaws as either Sergio Leone's Man with No Name in the "Dollars" trilogy or criminals as "Dirty Harry" in his five Warner Brothers crime movies. Bestselling British author Alistair MacLean penned the splendid screenplay that he later converted into a much tamer novel about a team of elite British M.I. 6 secret agents that parachute into Germany to rescue one of the top-ranking officers with a mother lode of knowledge about the June 6th Normandy landings. This MGM blockbuster that runs 158 minutes is probably the greatest action-adventure movie with a World War II setting ever produced. We're talking wall-to-wall gunfire with more surprises and complications ... Read More

VHS : Look Back In Anger
This film is full of problems. The first problem is that Richard Burton is horribly miscast as the lead. He is too old for the part, doesn't have the right speaking voice for the part and comes across as whiny.

The second problem is the play itself. The play wants to be all socialist, proletarian and giving it to the middle classes. But in the end what its about is the middle classes slumming and feeling sorry for themselves. Its difficult to find much sympathy for that. There is nothing likeable about Jimmy. It might have worked if Jimmy was actually working class, didn't have the middle-class connections and was a frustrated person with no way out. But as it is, there is no real value in listening to a big baby wallow in self-pity for two hours.

The other thing thing ... Read More

4.Trouble in the Glen starring: Margaret Lockwood, Orson Welles, Forrest Tucker, Victor McLaglen, John McCallum
directed by: Herbert Wilcox

VHS : Trouble in the Glen
Maurice Walsh, long endeared to readers for Irish classic The Quiet Man, also wrote an endearing tale set in the Scottish Highlands: TROUBLE IN THE GLEN.

For some reason, the brilliant, funny, and endearing TROUBLE has largely been lost to time, rarely carried by video houses and not out on DVD. If you get a VHS copy, you'll have to endure scratchy sound and bad color--but it's well-worth it.

Orson Welles is a belligerent Argentine descendent of Highland lairds, returned to take up the title, and hating every second of it. His tirade against bagpipes and the Scottish brogue at the beginning is worth the price of this tape! Although he's a bit silly made up to look like a tanned Scotsman, his performance in right on key!

As Welles cracks down on locals to defend ... Read More

5.Reflection of Fear starring: Robert Shaw, Sally Kellerman, Mary Ure, Sondra Locke, Signe Hasso

VHS : Reflection of Fear
I strongly agree with the first reviwer. Here is a forgotten gem which is now available on region 2 DVD. An excellent cast working with a strong, moody script. Robert Shaw delivers an understated performance and Sondra Locke demonstrates that she was a clever actress who was more than just Clint Eastwood's girlfriend in the seventies and eighties. The atmosphere is rife with tension and the cinematography is beautiful. The film looks like it was shot thru a gauze fabric. If you love thrillers in the Hitchcock mode then do yourself a favor and get this film. And the best way to enjoy it is with the cell phone turned off, in an empty house and in the dark of the night.

6.The Mind Benders starring: Dirk Bogarde, Mary Ure, John Clements, Michael Bryant, Wendy Craig
directed by: Basil Dearden
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : The Mind Benders
Ostensibly a run-of-the-mill espionage thriller with radical science flourishes, after 30 minutes of the aforementioned , "The Mind Benders" turns into a harrowing treatise on marital love, which apparently needs a lot of smoke, mirrors and hapless hope to survive. The ending is far from "happy," as the audience feels like they've braved a wet weekend of ghost stories at the end of this nifty littly thriller!!
