VHS : Six Weeks
I first watched this movie when I was about 18. I was pretty self absorbed at that time as most 18 year olds and emotionally numb. This movie still made me cry like I was a little girl. Anybody who doesn't cry at this movie probably didn't cry at "Old Yeller" either. I have been searching for this movie since I was eighteen which was 20 years ago, and I paid $40.00 for a VHS tape of it. It stuck in my mind for that long. Yes, it is that good. I will be sorry when I wear it out. Mary Tyler Moore is classy, and all that a lady should be in this movie. I hope anybody that watches it enjoys it as much as most of the rest of us obviously have.

VHS : Finnegan Begin Again
I bought this a couple of years ago but never had the chance to watch it. I am glad I did.

I believe the characters, I believe the story. Then again, when it is two superb craftsmen as Mary Tyler Moore and Robert Preston, it is quite easy. Incredible nuance in both of their performances, never a false note.

And Sam Waterston is a hoot!!! My wife and I are Law & Order addicts and to see him in this role was hysterical.

VHS : Ordinary People
Like watching a bunch of 4-year-olds throwing temper tantrums about early bedtimes. The main characters in this film spend their time either sulking petulantly or delivering semi-coherent, self-indulgent speeches.

The movie is nonetheless well-shot, with some superb scoring to Pachelbel's Canon. Indeed, the opening montage, in which scenery shots dissolve to the choir performing, is great. It also gives interesting insight into its era. But Ice Storm revisited that kind of material with less emoting, as did Stand By Me. If this movie had been cut by an hour, with the talking/whining elided, it could have been great.

VHS : Last Best Year
This movie is absolutely haunting. I had seen it when it originally aired but recently got it on vhs and ended up watching it 2 nights in a row. The subtlety with which Bernadette Peters plays the role of the dying woman makes the characters impending death all the more heartrending. Her vulnerability coupled with her dignity really make you care deeply about what is happening to her. Mary Tyler-Moore also brings a necessary piece into this film with her sensitivity and compassion into her role as the caring therapist which coupled with Bernadette Peters portrayal complete the picture. They play off of each other brilliantly. Be forewarned that this movie is very sad but if you don't mind a lump in your throat and tears uncontrollably streaming down your face then this is the movie for you.

VHS : The Very Best of Rhoda [4 VHS Boxed Set]
The Mary Tyler Moore Show is one of my favorite classic comedy shows and Rhoda is one of the best characters and they even gave Valarie Harper her own show in which she played Rhoda and I was really mad when TVland and Nick At Nite dropped the reruns of Rhoda from their lineups. I was hoping that since The Mary Tyler Moore Show has gotten complete seasons on DVD that they would do the same for Rhoda! Come on, Rhoda is a great classic show and should be on DVD!

VHS : Flirting With Disaster
Mel Coplin (Ben Stiller), the adopted son of two neurotic New Yorkers (Mary Tyler Moore and George Segal) feels that he can't name his new born baby until he finds his roots. This leads to him taking off on a cross-country road trip with his wife (Patricia Arquette), his baby and a woman from his adoption agency (Tea Leoni), which, as the title suggests, leads them from one comical disaster to another.

I have now seen all of David O. Russell's films, and of his four films (the other three being "Spanking the Monkey", "Three Kings" and "I Heart Huckabees"), "Flirting with Disaster" is the one that I had the hardest time making it through. It took me two attempts to make it to the end of this film, and the only reason why I kept going the second time was because I'm a completist and wanted to be able to say ... Read More

VHS : The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Chuckles Bites The Dust
Of all the episodes of Mary Tyler Moore, this has to be the best! The way they deal with the death of their friend, Chuckles the Clown, is both touching and hilarious. The jokes cracked in the newsroom about the bizarre way Chuckles died horrified Mary, but the humor, and the sadness, get to her. As Murray said "It could have been worse. He could have gone as Billy Banana and had a gorilla peel him to death!" ROTF

I know that episode helped me through a very difficult time. When my mother died, it was devastating to me. For some reason, I put on a video of Chuckles Bites the Dust the morning of her funeral. Surprisingly, it helped me cope. Thanks, Chuckles. Thanks Mary.
